Introductory survey of African American literature from 18th century through World War I, including oral and written forms (folktales, spirituals, sermons; fiction, poetry, essays), by authors such as Phillis Wheatley, Frances Harper, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, Charles Chesnutt, Booker T. Washington, and Pauline Hopkins. P/NP or letter grading.
