Introduction to Bioengineering
Description: Lecture, two hours; discussion, one hour; outside study, three hours. Preparation: high school biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics. Introduction to scientific and technological bases for established and emerging subfields of bioengineering, including biosensors, bioinstrumentation, and biosignal processing, biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue engineering, biotechnology, biological imaging, biomedical optics and lasers, neuroengineering, and biomolecular machines. Letter grading.

Fall 2019 - Our grading scheme ended up being 10% in-class question (ask once throughout the quarter), 15% a library assignment, 25% article summary, 10% abstract, 35% for the group podcast, and 5% for some surveys/questionnaires. This class basically just consists of guest lecturers coming every week and talking about their research. We had a few assignments due throughout the quarter based on the class reading articles and summarizing them/utilizing library tools. Final project was a group project based off a chosen topic (we were given a list). The work load was pretty light in the first few weeks but we ended up having this 12-15 minute podcast assignment due week 10, which was not fun to worry about during finals. If anything, I'd follow the recommended schedule and get writing and recording done early.

Professor Tawil is a terrible professor. I took BE10 with him. The class is not hard, it's just annoying. It's an introductory course so people don't normally take it seriously. I took it while I was a junior so the class was useless to me. Everything is way too broad and you don't learn anything in detail.... due to that fact, it's hard for people to predict what sort of questions will be on the quizzes. However, the class itself has nothing to do with Tawil's teaching abilities. His lectures put people to sleep. He wasn't helpful at all and tried to avoid students by telling his students to go to the TA's office hours instead. Moreover, when it comes down to grading, he was pretty irrational. I actively participated in every lecture and every discussion section. When I had my points break down, I received only a 14 out of 20. So I asked him why... and he told me that he just didn't feel like giving anyone above a 14. He wanted a curve at B- or B and I'm pretty sure he only gave 5% of the class an A or an A-. For the rest of my bioengineering career, I'm avoiding all his classes for electives because he's just an inadequate professor.

be 10 was superrrr easy. and really boring. the class is structured so that each week, a different upper division bioengineering professor talks about what they do. you get points for asking questions and attendance. if you leave after signing in, dr wu will notice. discussion is only like 5 minutes long. the paper is kind of a pain, but its the only assignment you do all quarter. you dont have to know anything that is lectured about in class. everyone gets an A if you just go to class and follow the given format of the paper.
