Bilingual Writing Workshop

Description: Seminar, four hours. Limited to graduate students. Writing sample required; access to course webpage mandatory; need not be bilingual to enroll. Technical instruction, analysis, and theoretical discussion of bilingual creative expression through genre of short fiction. Bilingualism as both politics and aesthetics to be central theme. Discussion and analysis of Chicana/Chicano and Latina/Latino short story collections. Peer critique of weekly writing assignments. Emphasis on narrative techniques such as characterization, plot, conflict, setting, point of view, and dialogue, and magical realism as prevailing Chicanesque/Latinesque style. Some attention to process of manuscript preparation, public reading, and publication. Concurrently scheduled with course CM135. Letter grading.
