Morris is ok. Her lectures are not the best in the world, but I also don't remember them being painfully boring--I only fell asleep once or twice. There is a lot of reading, but not all of it is "mandatory" and a lot of it is interesting. Overall, it's a pretty easy class, if you get the right TA. The midterm and final were easy because she gives you a list of things you need to know beforehand. She lists out ALL of the slides and vocab that will be on the tests, and even gives you the page numbers of the things you should read again. Basically, it's just memorization. The papers are not bad either. The topis are not dry and are straight fwd. Not too hard--I got As on both of them. BUT, you should check with your TA first to see what he/she is looking for, because A LOT of people were shocked with their first grade. I'd recommend the class... it's an interesting and easy way to get rid of a GE.

he integrated the lecture pretty well, lots of possible extra credit, as long as you do the reading, u dont realli need to go to lecture; he was sporadically funny=) which was cool. he tries to give lots of hints during slide exams; take this class for an easy g.e.! as long as you put in a few hrs before exams and kinda keep up with the reading, it shouldnt be hard to get an A~

I took Latin 1 with professor Richlin in Fall 2008. Latin is a really tough language since it's not spoken, but professor Richlin is super into the material, ergo students tend to be interested. there are 29 HW assignments that are english to latin translation (which is very difficult, but the worksheets are doable), and she allows you to drop 4 of them at the end of the quarter. there are 5 vocab quizzes that are easy so long as you study. You get to drop one of those at the end of the quarter as well. she gives both midterm and final review sheets that spell out almost EXACTLY what you need to study, which make the midterm and final fairly easy. HW-25%, Quizzes-25%, Midterm-25%, Final-25%. professor Richlin WANTS her students to succeed, and she is a GREAT professor. BEST PROFESSOR i've had at UCLA so far (i'm a 2nd yr)--like I said, she is super into the material which makes the class interesting. She is super nice, has a racy sense of humor (her expertise is Latin obscenities), and is very stylish. lecture MWF, drill section TR. there are 2 books for the course, but you only need to read/prepare translations from Latin Via Ovid as long as you GO TO CLASS because she explains the lecture concepts really well in class

When it comes to lower division introductory classics courses, I would not recommend Professor Wood. Rather than offering a broad overview of greek civilization, she would lecture us on very specific topics. It was more of an analysis of classical greek literature, than a civilization course. Much of what she lectured on was also very opinionated, and sadly, her lecture style was extremely boring. She stood infront of the class for an hour and a half and talked. I had never dreaded going to a Classics lecture until this class. I've taken 2 prior Classics courses (20 and 30) and this was by far the worst. She would often have to stop class and tell people to wake up. I just don't think she's the right person to be teaching an introductory classics course.
