Professor Dyck is awesome! I totally enjoyed attending his lecture for his Discovering the Romans class--of course, my interest in the material was pretty high. His lecture style is great--always as though he's telling some kind of story. Beware--note taking is beyond crucial in this course, even though it's just a GE. He gives you lots of terms and many reading assignments, but come time the Midterm and the Final, he gives a study guide telling you specifically which terms to study for, as well as the outline of the exam. Of course, your grade is really up to the TA, so I'd recommend going to Office hours for the paper to see what your TA is specifically looking for. But once you do that, and do the reading, you should do pretty good. Overall, a great GE class.

I took this class this quarter. I got a 93 and a 95 on the midterms, a 100 and a 96 on the essays and i dont know yet what i got on the final The tests are completely fair. He goes off the bold and italicized words in his lecture notes. Going to class is a must if you want to know the details he wants from you on his tests. If you miss a day, see if your TA can help I had Bethany Simpson, she was amazing. I missed 2 lectures bc i was sick and I got lecture notes from her, my TA, go figure. Seriously people your TA's are there to help you, not scare you. If you miss a day get notes from anyone, its better than nothing at all. He puts important slides online that you need to know. There are questions on geographical locations. These he stresses in his lectures and they come form the reading. DO the reading, the passages are specific. It is necessary if you want an A. The paper topics are always great. I loved them I really enjoyed this class, and I have come out knowing a lot, not just a bunch of random facts, I think I really know about the ROMANS!

Gurval is an extremely good lecturer that put me to sleep, but I think it was just me because everyone else stayed awake. The lectures that I did manage to make it through, information was organized, precise, and understandable. The only reason I did mediocre in the class was because of my TA - Palaskas; if you get her, transfer out because she grades everything insanely hard because she's just so into the class herself. Just do the readings and memorize the reader and you'll get an A.

Professor McDonnell is absolutely wonderful. I would recommend this class even if you don't have to take it. This class made me actually look forward to class, but if you get Hilary as a TA definitely switch because she's completely terrible and no help at all. Having her as a TA is my only complaint, otherwise this class was great!!!

Purchase is VERY passionate about classics, which made me want to learn more. His class is VERY fair. If you at least skim the reading and keep up in lecutre, you will do well. Every quiz and test is VERY straightforward, he tells you exactly what will be on it. Like most north campus classes, your grade is determined by your TA, as he/she grades both of the papers (which aren't too bad) = 45%, the three quizzes (5% each =15%), and the final exam (30%). Final exam was very fair. I reccomend this class....
