Literature and Writing: Great Books from World at Large
Description: Discussion, four hours. Enforced requisite: English Composition 3 or 3H or English as a Second Language 36. Not open for credit to students with credit for course 1D or 2DW. Study and discussion of major literary texts usually overlooked in courses that focus only on canon of Western literature, with emphasis on literary analysis and expository writing. Texts from at least three of following areas read in any given term: African, Caribbean, East Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern literature. Texts may include works by authors such as Ngugi, Desai, Kincaid, Emecheta, El Saadawi, Achebe, Pak, Can Xue, Neruda, and Rushdie. Satisfies Writing II requirement. Letter grading.

Winter 2016 - Fatima was a great literature instructor. Class was always very engaging and her assignments were interesting. It also helps that she provided a majority of the readings and that we often watched films or TV show episodes to discuss in class. The class is by no means easy but you do learn from it and she provides a lot of help in her office hours. Its not really an easy GE but it isn't overly difficult either.

The class is by no means easy but you do learn from it and she provides a lot of help in her office hours. Its not really an easy GE but it isn't overly difficult either.

Spring 2017 - participation- 10% online posts- 10 % Essay 1 (3-4 pages)- 15% Midterm - 15% Midterm re-write (4-5 pages) - 20% Final (6-8 pages)- 30% Lilit has an amazing syllabus for the class. I even kept my books.She takes a little time to warm up to class so the first few lectures may be awkward. The class is very participation-heavy and ten percent of the grade depends on weekly discussion posts that have to be about 250 words long. She gives extensions on papers and is super accommodating. I would really recommend going to her office hours because she's super helpful and usually lets you know your possible grade and she even allows email drafts. However, she can be a little formulaic and prefer standard academic essay format. But at the end of the day, she just wants you to be a better writer. 10/10 recommend this class. Would take it again.
