Sociology of Education
Description: (Same as Sociology M175.) Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour. Study of how U.S. educational system both promotes socioeconomic opportunities and maintains socioeconomic inequalities: historical and theoretical perspectives on role of education in U.S. society; trends in educational attainment; ways in which family background, class, race, and gender affect educational achievement and attainment; stratification between and within schools; effects of education on socioeconomic attainment, family, health, attitudes, and social participation; educational policies to improve school quality and address socioeconomic inequalities. Letter grading.

Spring 2019 - Amazing professor and very approachable and understanding. She did recorded lectures with slides and explained things clearly while also hosting office hours after class for those who were able to watch lecture immediately. She broke things down clearly and asked always checked in with her students on how they are doing. Loved this class and the professor. Both midterm and final asked the same question for the prompt but had different page length recommendations (its do able). She also offered extra credit. Midterm 30% Final 30% 3 quizzes 30% that is straight forward Discussion 10%

Fall 2018 - Dr. Nooshin is one of my favorite professors at UCLA. She is incredibly compassionate, caring, knowledgable, and fun. She makes the lecture discussions super engaging and interesting. There is no actual midterm/final exams, she gives us options of social media discussion, an event paper and one final paper. In general, this is not a hard class, but you learn a lot and Dr. Nooshin makes everything so fun to learn. She is also an activist and participate in Slut Walk performances etc. Dr. Nooshin enjoys knowing students, by the middle of the quarter, she remembers most students' names and my classmates always participate in active discussions in lectures. I highly recommend this class!!
