Winter 2021 - Professor McIver is incredibly smart and very kind. The course is extremely flexible, and you can write about what interests you within certain constraints. Dr. McIver gives great writing advice, and the workload isn’t too much if you stay on top of it. The course culminates in a final portfolio where you include your drafts and writing s that you are most proud of.

I personally did not like her class at all! It was terrible mistake, the class was more like a history lesson than a writing class, above all I thought her comments that she gave for my papers were so so vague.. Never have i heard the word "good" or see it on any of my papers. Don't get me wrong, i'm not a bad writer.. Having been a sociology major at UCLA i had to write tons of papers and I did well in all of them, but getting at A with her seemed far far away from possible. I have never written a review and considering I took her class in 2007, I really felt the urge to tell people that they should know what they are getting into.

She prefered us to call her Shelby during class which i still had trouble with till today, but Professor Popham is a very helpful and thoughtful teacher. Our class got us prepared for writing our thesis paper at the very end. Although she does have many assignments she gives out along with reading notes and reflections after each class, the busy work is to get us writing constantly. The assignments you take home are vey useful later for other classes like apa formating and mla, annotated bibliographies and abstracts for thesis. She has very entertaining stories to tell in class that always make me laugh and inspired to write. I recommend Popham. You can revise as many times as you like and she always responds with either recommended or required revision. Great class, fun, and educational!
