Spring 2017 - I write short stories myself and this class teaches me writing can be not fun at all and extremely subjective. Popham will change the theme of your paper and tell you sentence by sentence what SHE wants in there but not what YOU want. One person out of the whole class gets A. If you want to torture yourself just go take it and spend more than 10 hours a week and pray for a "B and above".

I'm the naysayer here. First, I admit that Professor Tara Prescott is a very kind person , and the course materials are kind to students. However, I doubt if her class is a good writing course. This course talks a lot on readings like Harry Potter. These discussions are "interesting", but have little to do with improving writing skills. I learnt most of writing during office hours. And the pace of the class is weird. Even though she does not talk lots about writing, the first essay dues on week two. There is only a "shitty first draft" two days before that, and she does not look at that. This means that you have no editing advice if you don't go to office hour. Essay 2 and 3 have peer review sessions, however you can't trust your peers too much. Professor Prescott focuses on grammar and languages rather than your thoughts in the essays. However your peers would probably not look at those detailed stuff. And mostly you have only two days to edit after peer review. It's really hard to make a perfect essay unless you are a experienced writer. Conclusion for those who are too lazy to read: It's true that Professor Prescott is a good person, but I only recommend this class for those who are confident about their writing skills and are seeking a fun class. Not recommended for those who want to learn something substantial. Especially not recommended for international students.

Winter 2019 - The professor was pretty nice. There are 3 essays which I felt were graded quite harshly. I put the most effort into my final essay and I ended up getting a B+ on it. I was expecting to hopefully get an A in the class but I did not. There were weekly readings that we had to do and then post a short response online on what we read. These were easy because I stopped doing all the readings and I usually did the shortest one for the week and then wrote the response in less than an hour. Overall, she actually helped me improve on my writing and her class focused on contemporary media. I would recommend her but don’t expect to turn in half-assed essays and get an a in the class. A “B+” is doable but you have to be a good writer to get an A. I’d also recommend going to her office hours because she gives good feedback on essays which can help you see what she wants in the paper.

Fall 2019 - This is a great class. He is engaging, entertaining, and the subject we are learning about is really interesting. He always asks a question on our sign in sheet to get to know more about the students. The class is relatively easy, but thats mainly because the subject he chose for the class is easy to write about. Very interesting class and a great teacher.

Honest, EC3 is one of the most useful classes you will ever take in college. Greg has done a wonderful job. He does not have many assignments and he helps you through each one. And you can basically write about anything you want as long as what you write is a social/cultural commentary. Writing something you really like makes writing fun. Greg's reading are very interesting and funny. Take him if you have the chance. Great guy, great class.

Really nice guy and entertains the class each and every lecture. If you understand and utilize his recommendations on your essays you should definitely be able to pull off an A-, if not an A. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Samuels' class considering I was a pretty decent writer and got an A.
