Fall 2019 - Professor Kipen himself is an interesting character....he refuses to give students A's right away and is a great criticizer. At the end of the day he looks for growth in students writings. Only thing I did not like was his very vague comments on how to better prepare for essays. For example I would ask "How can I make sure my essay doesn't seem too opinionated? How can I equally spread out my opinion, evidence, facts, etc?" and he would respond "Well that is tough, but keep in my mind opinion in an essay is necessary and important but refrain from using too much or it will take over the entire thing, just make sure to add enough evidence." Like SIR you did NOT answer my question.

I had him for comp 2 and i had to tai whim again for comp 3. HE is an amazing professor. He is funny, lively, and is very concerned about his students. Your grade will depend on the amount of time and work you put into your papers. He give a lot of work but he will make sure you writing improves by the end of the quarter. I learned more with him in one quarter than I did in 4 years of Honors and AP classes in high school. I got a B+ which is not bad. Go to his office hours and he will help ALOT!

Three papers; all relatively short. A few journal entries. Readings were easy. Her appointments however are something else. You dread knowing she'll have something nonconstructive or sardonic to say. She means well, though. Prof. Mano when you try in class, and she makes it that much easier for you if you do. She's a nice person, just really, really, really blunt.

Winter 2017 - If you are lucky enough to get a spot in her class please do take it! She is an absolutely amazing person and professor. From movies to video games and Facebook and Snapchat to artificial intelligence, she covered fascinating topics that we relate to and gave them deeper socio-cultural bases. Her discussions are captivating, her class content is super interesting and her grading is fair and comprehensive. Participation matters in her class and even though the idea of voicing your opinions in front of everyone is absolutely daunting, she brings out the best in you and encourages you without any pressure. Unexpectedly, I genuinely felt like contributing as much as I could. She makes you feel passionately about what you are writing and thus gets you really involved in it. She understands that writing, as a process, works differently for different people, and is very supportive and helpful. Her class has helped me improve exponentially and look at writing with more depth and perspective. Definitely one of the best classes I have taken here so far!
