Fall 2021 - I really enjoyed this class! Professor Martinez is extremely sweet and engaging and it is clear that he works hard to make the class interesting and straightforward. We focused on relevant issues and frequently discussed current events, an aspect I especially enjoyed. There were quite a few readings for this course but they weren't too long and were usually pretty fascinating. Martinez only assigned three major writing assignments the whole quarter and gave ample time and feedback for each. Overall I would highly recommend this professor and class, on top of being actually interesting and relatively easy Martinez is so kind and funny!

Winter 2016 - She has favorites. I took this class thinking I would improve as a writer but no nothing o that sort. She encourages her students to not worry about what grade they get and just write the papers without asking too many questions. If you ask questions, she will not answer saying, "I don't know, what do you think?" Like shut up, you'll be the one grading my paper, not me. She treats office hours like it's mandatory, lady, we have other classes too. I can't be coming to office hours every week. In fact, she doesn't even have office hours, you have to make an appointment with her in advance. I felt like if you didn't agree with her on something, she sorta disliked you and liked the majority of the class that kissed up to her. She is a hypocrite, she says don't do this but then when a certain student does that she says it's okay in that context but not otherwise. But then again, if you are really concerned about your grade then literally just do everything she ask of and you'll get a decent grade. Don't try to add anything on, just agree with everything. Be fake!!

Fall 2015 - It was a privilege to take English Composition 3 with Dr. McIver. For Fall 2015, the theme of the course was "Rhetoric of World War I", which I found to be pleasantly enjoyable. She "requires" that you read 5 textbooks, which total to over $100. The class discussions were driven by the reading required from the syllabus, which ranged from 80-100 pages of dense material before each class period. The course was definitely reading heavy (You can get away with not doing the reading if you skim sparknotes and participate in class). It is imperative that you show up for class because a lot of the grade goes to "Class Community"(participation) and she is more likely to give you a better grade if you are more engaged in the class. There were 2 essays for the course, which were to be turned into a portfolio that was turned in at the end of the quarter for a final grade. It was nice that she used this system because you could revise all of your papers and writing up until Week 10. There were no strict due dates for the papers except the last day of class. The first essay was a Rhetorical Analysis essay and the second essay was a Research Paper. For the research paper's topic was very flexible and anything related to the course could be chosen. Some tips for her class: 1. Go to office hours to develop a reputation and to get more feedback on your work. 2. Participate a lot in class 3. Get a lot of feedback for your essays because Dr. McIver will definitely steer you in the right direction. Overall, I loved her class and I would definitely recommend that you take English Comp 3 with McIver if you are up for a challenge. My writing definitely improved as a result.

I took Dr. Mehdizadeh's class in 2015 Fall and received an easy A. I agree her class are challenging, but her topics are interesting. I have one friend that took another Engcomp 3 class and all he did was writing essays about the history of LA. For Dr. Mehdizadeh's class you can write anything that's related to the concept of multi-culture and diversity. This is essentially helpful if you come from a diverse family or culture background. Honestly I don't think the class is that hard, I am an international student and English is not even my native language, yet I manage to get an A. So if you actually work and read, you will be fine. Would recommend this class, professional professor, interesting topic and good class environment.

Winter 2020 - I really liked professor Moe. We read the Handmaid's Tale along with a couple other stories. The readings aside from the novel were a fairly interesting and added perspective to what the main ideas of the book were. The class was very well designed holistically, and the final essay wasn't much of an issue with regards to formulating a thesis and backing it with citation. I'm not sure what other ENGCOMP3 classes are like, but this one is worth taking if you've got to get the GE out of the way. Do the readings, don't cram the essays. It's like any other English class.
