Fall 2021 - I took this F21 which was online. I highly recommend Professor De—she is not only super accommodating, but she also intellectually challenges you and pushes you out of your comfort zone to become a better writer. The class is interesting: the readings/topics all on masculine/feminine/gendered characteristics in society. The class time is spent analyzing/discussing movies/music videos (Avengers, Jlo, bollywood dance videos, kpop videos,Beyonce, Spice girls, shaolin fight movies, etc.). There were 3 papers, the first one being the longest (approx 7-10 pages) and for this first one she meets with each of the students to discuss the topic and give guidance. Second one was 4-5 pages, and third paper was 2 pages. The final is a revision paper, where you choose a past paper that you want to substantially revise with her in a conference. During the conference she gives you a lot of notes which are super helpful. Overall, the work is light and very manageable and it really is "the more work you put in the class the more you get out of it". Through taking her class I've definitely grown a lot in my confidence as a writer and also in my critical analysis. Highly recommend.

Winter 2020 - Professor Dickey truly cares about her students. From the engaging projects, papers, and informative group discussions, Professor Dickey has truly made me a confident and better writer. The class is discussion based which helped me develop a sense of critically analyzing a film’s underlying message in regard to race and racial identity. She strives to inspire and develop powerful writers. Like any other class at UCLA, there is a good amount of work but at the end of the day it is worth it, what you put in is the grade you will receive so make sure to participate, do the readings and watch the movies. I highly recommend this class for anyone trying to fulfill their diversity requirement or writing 2!

Winter 2019 - The essays that you are assigned in this class might be boring, which is about family love stories( I've heard that she has stuck with this topic since she started to teach.) However, this class is definitely an easy A cause I believe most of the work is graded by completion not accuracy and as long as you follow her suggestions when revising.

Winter 2021 - Okay, I like Prof Johnson's humor, but this class IS JUST SO HARD FOR NO REASON. The theme of the class is the American Dream, which is pretty funny as I am not an American. We have to do journals before classes, and these journals can take HOURS because we have to watch television shows and write three pages about them. The journals are graded upon completion tho. WE HAVE TO PAY FOR HBO AND NETFLIX SUBSCRIPTIONS. The textbook was trash, except the AXES structure that you must use in your essay unless you want to get a B. If you finish everything on time, you will get a B. The final portfolio involves a cover letter and two essays, each of them are six pages long. We have to write three-page drafts for three essays, and you can choose two of them as part of your final portfolio. Only the portfolio will actually be graded. BUT! In the syllabus, he said if you get EXEMPLARY on both essays, you WILL GET AN A. if you get one EXEMPLARY and one SATISFACTORY, you will get an A- or B+ depending on which essay you got exemplary for. if you get two SATISFACTORY grades, you will get a B. HE MENTIONED NOTHING ABOUT LOW OR HIGH EXEMPLARY I got TWO LOW EXEMPLARY on both of my essays, and MY GRADE WS 92/100, which WAS AN A-, NOT AN A!!!!!!!

Fall 2018 - The professor is not easy on you, but for good reason. After taking this course, I feel as though my writing and understanding of how to write has greatly improved. It feels discouraging in the beginning, as the rough draft is graded (though not inputted into the grade book) to show if you are on track with the first essay assignment. Most everyone would do poorly. Just make sure you do the (usually) bi-weekly reading logs to the best of your ability (hopefully scoring extra credit points as you do so), engage in class, and be willing to accept and ask for criticism. It was rough, no doubt. At the same time, I could not have asked for a better professor.

You will want to actually go to class and it is never boring. The readings he assigns are actually interesting too ! I was so scared to take a writing class because i suck at it but this class was actually ENJOYABLE.
