Literature, Culture, and Criticial Inquiry
Description: Lecture, four hours. Enforced requisite: course 3. Use of analysis of literary works within cultural context to engage students in critical thinking and writing about issues important to academic inquiry and responsible citizenship. Minimum of 15 to 20 pages of revised text required in addition to regular informal writing exercises. Satisfies Writing II requirement. Letter grading.

She is soo amazing! The class was so interesting and really makes you WANT to work on your papers and make them better. she's really enthusiastic and engaging, and unlike a lot of teachers, she's actually nice and really encouraging in emails. you won't regret taking a class with her!!

Winter 2020 - Overall, I enjoyed having English Comp 5W with Tamar. This course requires completion of three full-length essays throughout the quarter (25% each * 3 = 75% of your grade), and the rest of your grade (25%) consists of participation in class discussions. Tamar is an engaging lecturer who does cuss occasionally (she says she got that from the Navy lol), but she always has interesting insights for discussions and provides great feedback on the essays, which you should take seriously in order to do well in this class. Her style suggestions are interesting, and one unconventional style she had us play around with is known as Grammar B. As other reviewers have mentioned, Grammar B can be confusing and difficult to master, but I learned to love it because nowhere else have I been able to put together a creative piece that could consist of a recipe, letter, interview, news article or the like and still call it an essay. Individual appointments for the essays are mandatory, but you will enjoy them and be able to spend them learning how to make your writing that much more effective. If you need a Writing 2, I would highly recommend doing Eng Comp 5W with Tamar!

Professor Margaret Davis, better known as Peggy by her students, is one of the greatest English teachers I have ever had! The readings and literature she chooses for her classes are interesting and thought provoking (you won't mind reading for this class!). She is hilarious and facilitates great class discussions! When essay time rolls around, she is readily available in office hours or through e-mail. I high suggest taking an English class with Peggy!

I had Professor Fallows for College Summer Institute, a transition program for incoming freshmen, and at first, I didn't like his curriculum at all, but eventually I changed my mind completely because his essay assignments actually had me thinking. His first essay is a formal literary analysis essay, but it's not like the AP English style essay. This essay requires your personal input, which thus requires much critical thinking when you have transition analysis to your personal anecdotes and thoughts and back. His second essay was called a Grammar B essay. It's clash of art and writing because you have a chance to write an essay but in the most creative way possible on Microsoft Word. He even provides examples for the Grammar B essays in his course reader to give you an idea. The readings for the class consisted of plays, including the famous "Waiting for Godot." Since the plays were well selected, you should expect some interesting discussions in class. As for grade, it is based on two essays (three if it's during the regular school year) and participation. You can revise your essay over and over again until you get the grade you want since the final drafts are due on the last day of class. So, take advantage of that since he advised that there are no other professors like him who does that. English 5W should be the class for you if you want to fulfill the Writing II requirement and the Literary/Cultural Analysis GE requirement.

this teacher is absolutely awful. she is extremely opinionated and tore every essay that didn't agree with her views to pieces. if you are a suck up and will write whatever she wants to hear than you'll get no lower than a B but if you want to not have a nightmare 10 weeks of writing bull**** crap about things then take a different professor. she is elitist and unkind and she picks favorites right from the get go. no beans on this woman. GET THE **** OUTTA HERE!!!!

Winter 2016 - I loved this class! This has been my best class at UCLA so far! Not only was the professor good, but I became friends with the students in that class within a few classes (something really unheard of at UCLA). We still talk to this day. The schedule was pretty much read poem, write 300 words about poem, and essay. We also analyzed them in class before the reading responses were due, so people took notes and wrote upon that. We also had to do a presentation on a poem of our choosing, but that was pretty simple if you followed the directions. If you are looking for a relaxing yet highly interactive class, this is it!

Winter 2017 - I loved her, but I have some friends who are less enthusiastic. She picks some very hard material for the course, but her explanations about the meaning and the context of the work are extremely clear and helpful. My only problem is that she often sends out writing prompts the day before it is due, and it's really annoying to open up your email late at night and find yourself with last minute homework. But overall, I would definitely take again.

Spring 2019 - Loved this class. Nearly two hour "lectures" never felt like it. He absolutely adores good writing and gets everyone else to love it too. Also has an incredible range of knowledge on literature/film. Ask him about any writer, screenwriter, or director since the beginning of time and he's sure to have stories to tell about them.
