Oral Tradition
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Enforced requisite: English Composition 3 or 3H. Literary study of Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), with emphasis on literary devices and narrative structures in relation to Judaic historical, political, psychological, philosophical, and theological themes. P/NP or letter grading.

Professor Allmendinger has a tendency to make students feel like they are annoying him with valid questions and concerns during office hours or after class. He always seems like he wants to be left alone and rush home after lecture. I can't tell you how many times I've sparked up a conversation about my paper and he immediately asked me to to simply email him about it. He practically shoos students away. His office hours are even more awkward, you can tell he doesn't expect or want anybody to swing by and wants to simply eat his lunch alone and in peace. I wish I had the guts to ask him why he's in this line of work if he always want to help students from a far, far, FAR distance? It's not fair for those of us that need more guidance in a professor, and frankly, he doesn't want to inconvenience himself in order to do so. Such a bummer.

I had the pleasure of learning from Professor Maniquis twice in the '13-'14 school year. I took his English 111A class (Hebrew Bible) and his English 125 class (Violence in Lit.). His class is challenging in the best way. He requires a lot of reading, but is not too harsh when it comes to testing. The midterm and final are always incredibly fair; all of the information has been stressed and reviewed in class. The concepts I learned have been invaluable to my education at UCLA and I cannot stress how knowledgeable and kind Maniquis is. If you're interested in a quality education, be sure to sign up for one of his classes before you graduate.

This man is genuinely rude, petulant and self-absorbed to an incredible degree. This class is all about him, which he makes clear from the outset and repeats at frequent intervals. I have twice seen this man go into petulant rants in class, and speak very badly of students who were not present (people who were late, missed a class, etc.). This man does not just crow about his own accomplishments, he puts down others. Do not go into this class expecting to do anything but regurgitate Nagy's ideas back to him. Do not disagree with ANY idea he puts forth, do not attempt original thinking, et cetera.
