Special Topics in American Literature
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Requisites: courses 10A, 10B, and 10C, or 11 and 87. Interdisciplinary study of American literature in its relationships to other disciplines, including art, architecture, film, history, music, politics, and various social sciences, with emphasis on application of literary methodology to historical survey of American culture. May be repeated for credit with topic or instructor change. P/NP or letter grading.

Spring 2019 - I am currently taking "Reading Citizenship" with Dr. Hyde. I ended up taking this class because it lined up with the rest of my schedule and I wasn't even that excited to be taking this class. One session in and I was already sooooo intrigued. I was disappointed that there was a no screen policy in this class, however, I can confidently say that the annoying unanimous typing sound would have only been distracting from the amazing lectures that this professor gives. Soon enough I switched over from google docs and kindle to pen and paper and paperbacks. Dr. Hyde is clearly ~very~ passionate about this topic and that makes her class worth taking. There are weekly readings and online discussion forums and the workload is rather heavy however she makes up for it with extremely well prepared and well-organized lectures. Her material is always up to date, she even includes student notes and from the online discussions which were posted the day before, so you know she really does care about the student thoughts. I have a great amount of respect for Dr. Hyde, 4 class meetings in and I am already in love with early American literature and the history associated with it.

Fall 2021 - Professor Perez-Torres is one of the best professors I've had so for. He is incredibly engaging in his lectures and genuinely interested in what his students have to add. He doesn't just talk at the audience, but often takes time out to encourage class discussion. The lectures make you really interested in the texts, even if you didn't necessarily like them at first glance. For the workload, it was definitely quite a bit of work, but I also personally put a lot of effort into this class. I'm sure you could get away with doing less. We had one midterm, a shorter essay (about 1200 words) and a final paper (about 2000 words). He gave prompts for the papers but was very lenient in adapting them to what you want to write about. He was very helpful in office hours and often took out time out of his day if I needed an office hour outside of his regular schedule. He also let us do a short presentation for extra credit. If you ever have the chance to take Professor Perez-Torres, you should! I wouldn't even care what he is lecturing about, he'd find a way to make it interesting.
