Critical Reading and Writing
Description: Lecture, four hours. Enforced requisite: English Composition 3 or 3H or English as a Second Language 36. Introduction to literary analysis, with close reading and carefully written exposition of selections from principal modes of literature: poetry, prose fiction, and drama. Minimum of four papers (three to five pages each) and two in-class essays. Satisfies Writing II requirement. Letter grading.

Winter 2016 - STACIE IS THE MOST INCREDIBLE PROFESSOR/TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. I learned more from her in 10 weeks than I learned from all of my English teachers in high school combined. I guarantee that she will make your writing 10 times better, will enhance your critical thinking skills, and grow your love and interest in literature. 4HW with her was great because it was all class based discussions, with Stacie allowing us to create the dialogue and her jumping in occasionally to guide the conversation. She meets with every student one on one to discuss essays in detail, makes you do creative writing pieces, and assigns movies to watch to complement themes in the books you read. A multidisciplinary, relevant, interesting, amazing class. Cannot recommend more.

Winter 2019 - This class is designed and taught entirely by TAs. There is no interrogation with the Professor whatsoever. I took this class with Vivian Delchamps. English 4WH was one of the best classes I've taken at UCLA. There are no in class exams, the required texts were enjoyable to read, and class discussions were always engaging and often profound. Participation is required, but everyone is given plenty of opportunities to speak, so it's not a competition. While this is an honors class, essays are not graded harder and the workload is very manageable. In my section, we read "Beloved," "Of Mice and Men," "The Glass Menagerie," "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe," and selected poetry. At most, we had to read 150 pages in a week, but we often read much less. Grading: 10% Homework (completion); 20% Participation and attendance; 10% Paper 1 (2 pages); 15% Paper 2 (5 pages); 15% Paper 3 (4-5 pages); 20% Revised Paper 3 (6-7 pages); 10% Presentation (5 minutes, very informal).

Mark Gallagher is a great instructor, one of the best I have had so far at UCLA. I had him for English 4w -- really funny and smart, very entertaining, too. He can be a bit intimidating because he teaches 4w like an upper level English course (lots of quoting and totally obscure literary references.) He has a tendency to talk a lot but you learn a lot from him, especially when he talks about Ralph Waldo Emerson or Henry David Thoreau (which is all the time.) It's cool because he has this crazy Boston accent which makes everything he says sound even more intelligent. I don't think I can say enough good things about Mark. He's super passionate about literature and he is really serious about making you love it, too. Makes everyone in the class memorize a poem and recite it on the last day of class. He also is super helpful in his office hours. He pretty much is willing to go over every single one of your drafts and tell you what you are doing right and what you need to fix. I have had a few English courses since then and I have yet to find a more knowledgeable and dedicated teacher.

Engl 4W is supposed to be somewhat hard. it should be specially hard for ppl that always do bad in engl. well i'm one of them so u know i cant stand engl at all. still, JD is the best!! take engl 4 with him. he will work with you on personal basis on the papers and ATTEND his lecs, he can open up your mind!

TOOK HIM FOR ENGL 10B The posters below me are correct in voicing their negative opinions about him. To the person deeming it UNFAIR for him to put Blake on the final: how FAIR was it that he wasted WEEKS on Blake? How FAIR was it that he wasted ONE WHOLE CLASS talking about the print machines in London and how Blake drew and colored his covers and how the metal copies were made? HOW FAIR was it that he made us read a novel on the LAST DAY OF CLASS, spent the whole 2 hours lecturing on it and did not have a single question about it? PLEASE: he is intelligent (obvious if he's a professor) and he is nice but his tests are NOT FAIR.

The best professor I've had at UCLA. I'm a south campus student, and was expecting something awful, but this turned out to be one of the best classes I've taken. He taught this class without a TA and he really helped out all students with their writing, formation of thesis and analysis of literature. He grades fairly and pushes students to be better analytical writers--if they want it. Mott's a really likable guy, his office hours usually has students throughout the quarter.

Ms. Ocher is a very intelligent and very interactive professor. Her enthusiastic approach to literature has provided a wonderful experience and has particularly deepened my analysis of literary works. She challenges you to truly challenge your interpretations in an effort to sufficiently answer the questions of what an author is conveying, how they are conveying it, and why they are conveying that specific message. I have thoroughly enjoyed class discussions and have embraced new positions outside of my comfort zones. Unexpectedly, the class has been quite an enjoyable experience and I highly recommend her as a professor. Also, she's very cool too.
