Winter 2020 - This class consisted of 4 in-class quizzes and 2 papers: 1 paper being a collaborative essay with a partner from your discussion and the other paper being a self-reflective paper. There was no official midterm or final. Participation counts as well. Depending on your TA, you may have extra assignments, but nothing too serious. The quizzes were based off of assigned readings, and the readings themselves were easy to understand and not too long. The readings were given to us through CCLE, meaning we did not have to invest in any textbooks. The quiz prompts were hinted or given to us ahead of time in lecture and sometimes talked about in discussion, making the quizzes fairly easy. The quizzes were essay-style and limited to 2 front pages in a blue-book. Attending lecture is definitely necessary to do well in this class. Lecture, however, is very interesting overall as Professor Basarudin takes this class very seriously and cares about her students. The papers are bit more on the difficult side, but are still very intriguing. The prompts given are based off documentaries we watch in lecture and again, assigned readings. It's definitely doable and a very interesting GE! Important to note that tardiness is not tolerated. Doors will close and you will not be allowed to enter. Be sure to be on time! Although Basarudin may appear a bit strict at first, she will grow on you. She encourages student participation (not just for your grade) but for your own learning experience. I have genuinely enjoyed this class and 100% recommend.

Spring 2019 - Professor Hong is the sweetest person and her passion for teaching courses related to Gender Studies is evident, but she is the worst lecturer of all the professors I've had in 3 full years at UCLA. Her lectures are unorganized, tangential, and unrehearsed, ultimately making them pointless to attend, as all the material for her Gen 10 class this quarter was explained better in the assigned texts. She also says "um" and "right" and "ya know" about 10 times per sentence which makes it very difficult to pay attention. She is great at answering questions and explaining tricky topics in easily understandable ways, and she gives very fair exams. But, I wish I had taken Gen 10 with any other professor.

Fall 2020 - Loved it and def recommend!! I took this as an incoming first year and was scared given that it was my first quarter and everything was online, but this class is not only super easy but sooo interesting. Other people have been leaving comments about how hard the prof is to understand, but honestly it didn't matter too much because your grade is based on how you condense the weekly readings and documentaries as opposed to what the prof is saying. I didn't think it was at all a huge barrier so I really wouldn't worry about the prof being unclear. She's also super sweet and beyond willing to help you during office hours. your grade in this class is based on 6 weekly reflections that are graded by the TA, no final or midterm. Honestly everything we learned in this class is so applicable to daily life and just so eye opening in general. Made me consider a minor in gender studies, super great course and no textbook purchases needed!!!
