Description: (Formerly numbered 147.) Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Study of spatiality of social differences such as race, class, gender, age, sexuality, location. Critical explorations of identity, social categories, and spatial structures. Importance of space and place in social life. P/NP or letter grading.

Summer 2016 - I took Cultural Geography 3 with Professor Hughes. I really loved this class, it was very insightful and I learned a lot. The course consisted of a total of 4 reading reflections, 1 take-home midterm, and an in-class final. She distributed review sheets a couple days before the tests and they were really helpful. She would go over them with us in class. Participation is important in this class so make sure to talk and contribute to the class discussion. She is very approachable and would reply within a day when I would send her emails. She cares about her students and it shows!! Highly recommend this class!

Spring 2018 - Came into the class thinking it would be alright but the grader during this quarter was super hard so everyone got pretty low grades for the first test (my lowest grade in my entire UCLA career). Thought I knew the material, but guess she wanted more..but it got better as the class went on. The professor is super funny and approachable and lectures are always online right after so super convenient for those who don't want to attend lecture or fall asleep a lot.

Geog 140: Political Geography Man I hate politics. I hated doing readings for this class and I hated going to lecture. But I got an A on the midterm and a B on a paper that I turned in two days late with a 10% reduction, meaning I probably got an A on it. It wasn't me--the TA was Rob and he is a really approachable guy who grades easy and Sivak seems to grade easy as well. I didn't do much reading (basically at all, except for the paper), but I did go to about 75% of the lectures and focused my studying on that. His exams were the same for both the midterm and final. Blue book essays, pick two out of 5 or 6 topics, so as long as you are solid on a few key points and authors/readings, you're good for the exams. He set the midterm and final in class, though, so that means you have 50 minutes to write two essays. The paper was 35%, the midterm 25%, and the final 40%. Sivak himself is awkward in lecture, yes--but the 50 minute time limit makes him (and the topic of politics) bearable, and going to lecture is most definitely worth your while.
