I loved this class. He's pretty easy-going and not that tough of a grader, though be forewarned -- if it's apparent that you already have a more-than-average mastery of Japanese (at least relative to the rest of the class), he will be grading you a bit harder than the others. This is especially relevant if you test in and/or your speaking ability is significantly better than your handle on grammar/kanji. But, in general, you have to completely forget or misuse grammar to get marked down in oral tests (he even corrected me a few times on my grammar, and I got a perfect score overall). He's a bit picky when it comes kanji on homework (write it even if you haven't learned it! it makes for good practice! ...so he says), but usually you don't have to write kanji on the tests OR the finals, unless it's a kanji section. He's planning on starting a J-pop singing club and a manga-reading club in the near future. I probably should have just left it at that and not written anything else...

She is a VERY good teacher. She is very kind and is understanding and knows that people have difficult with the language. When she goes over her grammar points she tends to use a lot of examples and she correlates stories into her explanations of the grammar points. Overall, she's a really great teacher and you will learn a lot from her. Even though I got an 'A' in her class I EARNED it, it was not given to me. If you expect to receive and A make sure you do her work, and if you don't understand make sure you go to her office hours.

Nogami Sensei is wonderful! She's so witty and funny, it really makes class quite enjoyable. She's very quite confident and can be kind of intimidating, but in a language class, you really need an extra push, sometimes, to practice and use the language to learn it. The tests are very fair and if you study and participate in class, if should be just fine. Oral tests are kind of tricky, you have to always think about what grammar point to use on your own because she will most likely not prompt you for it. It's really casual and cool to take her class and you do learn a lot of Japanese for sure. When she asks questions that seem like "yes" or "no" questions, don't just answer "yes" or "no" and simply repeat the question...she definitely is trying to get you to expand on the topic and she's very patient in waiting for you to get your sentence out. She's very reasonable in class and very approachable outside of class. It's hard to get to know other students in the class, but you do learn a lot and have a great time with Nogami Sensei.

Fall 2020 - This professor is amazing. Professor Schricker is extremely helpful and very welcoming of students. The tests are a little tough, but honestly not too terrible if you go over her slides and homework. She was also extremely understanding of students and listened to feedback, which is honestly something some don't even care about. I would love to take this professor again. Professor Schricker is enthusiastic, funny, and able to teach the material fairly well.
