Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Requisites: courses 119A or 120A, 119B or 120B. Introduction to study of childhood bilingualism and adult and child second language (L2) acquisition, with focus on understanding nature of L2 grammar and grammatical processes underlying L2/bilingual acquisition. Discussion of neurolinguistic and social aspects of bilingualism. Concurrently scheduled with course C244. P/NP or letter grading.

Winter 2019 - C140 is an extremely difficult class, but Victoria is a lovely, helpful, and sweet professor. You can learn a lot from C140. She doesn't want to give anyone bad grades. I swear I don't really deserve my A because I feel like I just did so bad in my midterm and final. But still, Victoria just curved everything to make sure that everyone receive a decent grade. The lectures are very clear and Victoria is always happy to answer your questions. She doesn't care much about the results, she just wants to see that you are working hard and you are learning in the progress. I recommend this class if you are interested in doing linguistic researches in the future. It really makes you more think critically and you can really develop your research skills in her class.

Fall 2019 - This was one of the toughest, disorganized courses I took in the ling department thus far. The readings were dense and not debriefed, leaving lots behind on topics. Lectures were scattered and often lacked background information. The exams were tough; 2-3 essays closed-book. There was also a final project where the professor pairs you up with another student in the class to do a research paper, with a presentation included. I stopped going halfway through the quarter because the lecture did not help, and it was frankly a waste of my time.
