COURSE TAKEN IS MATH 1 Everybody who said Dallas (formerly known as Calahan) was a bad teacher and the class was DIFFICULT is a freshman. Math 1 is easy. Quit your whining. If you can accept the fact that this course is an exercise in: 1. Identifying the problem 2. Breaking it down to its parts 3. Taking the time to solve the problem Then you will do fine. If you're looking for a class where regurgitation will get you an A go back to HS. Here are a couple of hints (They DO work. Take them or leave them.): 1. Study in blocks of at least 3 hours. 2. Attention span is learned skill. Not an innate ability. Practice WILL improve it.

I also have recently taken PIC10A (Winter 2012) with Dr. Cheng, and I should say that he is one of excellent professors out there at UCLA. His personality and lecture style are less exciting than Dr. Jay Phelan and Dr. Craig Merlic's lectures (look them up, they are godly!) but I would say his lecture style is comparable to Dr. Corbin's. His homeworks are really tough. It's tough to the point where you spend few entire days trying to finish each homework! I'm not joking! The first few homeworks were breeze, but after when we covered vectors each homework he's given us totally took me forever! His last homework was such a relief because it took me a far less time than the previous ones. He also posts exercises to help you understand the material better, and it was definitely helpful for homework but I really wished he posted solutions to them online because it would made things far easier. Anyway going to his office hours helped me a lot understanding what I need to do for homework (and tests). His way of helping me understand the materials is like Dr. Craig Merlic's way (look up Merlic. He will blow your mind). His midterms were pretty easy if you did homework and exercises. But.... his final..... it was really challenging compared to his midterms. I pulled nearly perfect scores for both midterms but I doubt I did well on final as I did on midterms (well I didnt sleep on that day so I'd blame myself).. It was doable but the difficulty of the final exam was comparable to homeworks he's assigned in class. so guys.. do your homework and exercises. And seriously I don't want to say this again but go to his office hours! He is super approachable and awesome, and he earned his Ph.D from Harvard so you know he's genius. And yeah, he posts all the lectures online but I don't find them helpful as much unless you go to each corresponding lecture or office hour for help. P.S. For those of who took PIC10A with Dr. Cheng and are math majors/minors, he's teaching Math131A for Spring 2012! Don't miss your chance!

Course taken is actually Life Sciences 30A - Mathematics for Life Scientists, NOT Math 19. OK. So this is my first quarter, and I don't know much about professors, but so far, Professor Conley is my absolute favorite professor. He is very, very clear in his teaching style. His lectures might go at a quite slow speed, but that is a good thing because that helps a lot of people (maybe even nearly everyone) in the class to understand the concept. And no accent (try some other "foreign" professors, and you will see what I mean)! And you are very welcome to come to his office hours. I personally did not visit his office that many times, but I enjoyed every time that I spent there. He is very, very approachable. Just go to his office and get to know him. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO! He might even become your favorite UCLA professor.

- Obviously a very smart math scholar - Mumbles in class and runs through his prepared material very quickly to make sure he "covers" everything, rather than teaching/articulating the concepts to the students - Midterms and the final exam are exponentially different/more difficult than the homework and examples he shows us in class I basically had to rely on my TA, math lab, and reading the book to teach myself because he is not capable of communicating or explaining the material clearly in lecture. Horrible decision to take his class. If I could go back, I'd choose anyone but him. DO NOT TAKE if you want to pass Math 3B.

*** TOOK FOR MATH 61 *** Professor Schaeffer is a great lecturer for Math 61. His lectures are concise and easy to follow. He's also very approachable, dedicated and concerned with student learning. His exams are medium to hard in difficulty however, his grading is EXTREMELY lenient (lots of partial credit etc). Homework assignments are extremely challenging, and do not necessarily reflect what appears on his exams. Overall an excellent professor- I would recommend him.
