Differential and Integral Calculus
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Preparation: at least three and one half years of high school mathematics (including some coordinate geometry and trigonometry). Requisite: successful completion of Mathematics Diagnostic Test or course 1 with grade of C- or better. Differential calculus and applications; introduction to integration. P/NP or letter grading.

Fall 2013 I thought he was a reasonable professor. He was good at explaining most topics and truly did care that students would understand. He is kind of quirky in a good way! It is entertaining sometimes to see his tendencies in class. He does have an accent, but I don't think it got in the way of his teaching. Office hours with him were helpful and I thought his grading was fair.

Aschenbrenner explains concepts very well; rather than throwing formulas up on the board, he guides students through the math by presenting a problem and then walking through how to solve it. His proofs were extremely helpful. His tests are pretty difficult, but also generously curved, so I never really had a problem with them.

Great lecturer but VERY difficult professor, no partial credit, based on a 0,1,2 point system where a point is given for correct work but wrong answer and 2 points for complete answer+ work, overall he was the hardest math professor i have ever had and made 31B and 32A look like a walk in the park. i recommend him if you're willing to put in the time for his homework which takes about 4-5 hours depending on how well you interpret his "personal problems"

Fall 2018 - This was the most UNFAIR class ever. At the beginning of the year the class seemed fairly straightforward and everything made sense. We had homework every section, but it helped you for the midterms. I received a 97 on the first midterm and a 92 on the second one. However, for his final he clearly told us that he was going to make it more difficult than the previous years' exams because we were "more capable." If on average I scored a 94.5 on the midterms someone please tell me how it is possible/fair to get a 66% on the final. I think his class was great he was a great professor, but he said he didn't curve the class at all and was happy that most people scored D's than A's and B's combined because he thought that was a more even grade distribution. Overall, if you think there are better teachers out there for 31A please take them. If you're stuck with Brizolis it's easy until the end, which is what matters most (40% of your grade). So hope and pray you will do well

Professor Brown is a really nice guy and very helpful during office hours, but his lectures are pretty boring. I usually wanted to fall asleep in his class. If you don't want to go to class or can't stay awake, make sure to do the homework since there is a weekly quiz during discussion on one of the homework problems. Overall, I liked Professor Brown and I'm glad he gave us a 3x5 index card to use on the midterm and two cards for the final. If you take the time to learn the material and the theory behind it, then you'll do fine on the midterms and final. Like every other class, connect theories to one another because you will need to know how one is connected to the other for certain problems on the exams.
