Description: Lecture, three hours. Requisite: course 414A. Introduction to human resource management function and management of human behavior in organizations. Emphasis on relationships among individuals, groups, and organizational units as they influence managerial process and development of prospective general managers. Letter grading.

Barbara is one of only two tenured female faculty at The Anderson School (or perhaps she was the second and there are more now). At any rate, she has a solid reputation in her field, but I'm afraid that this particular course, or perhaps the way the curriculum is designed by the department, just doesn't resonate with most students. She isn't a hard grader, but the way she grades seems incongruous with the whole point of the class. Most of the readings are painfully dry and not germane to most managerial contexts. She gives four quizzes, and drops your lowest quiz grade. The final is basically the fourth quiz. They take on average 15-20 minutes to complete. There are several papers due, a few that are case analyses and some self-assessment papers. If you participate and memorize the buzzwords (most of which you'd forget soon after the quarter were they not so silly), you can get at least a B+. HR seems to me more a skill than something you can learn in a classroom. There are a few corny, touchy-feely in-class exercises. She is dedicated, however, and does seem to care (almost TOO much!) about how & whether students are learning. Is constantly giving out class feedback forms & whatnot.
