Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Not open for credit to students with credit for course 1A, 1AH, 5A, or 6A. Special mathematical preparation beyond that necessary for admission to University in freshman standing not required. Topics include planetary motion, Newton laws, gravitation, electricity and magnetism, wave motion, light, sound, and heat, relativity, quantum mechanics, atoms, and subatomic particles. As time permits, development of physical ideas placed in cultural and historical perspective. P/NP or letter grading.

Spring 2019 - Although some of the reviews may advise you to deter from enrolling in this class...Don't listen to them. Professor Holczer can be difficult to understand due to his accent, but he ALWAYS encourages his students to ask questions and let him know what he can do to clarify his instruction. He has even gone out of his way after class to personally ask me if he was being clear during lecture or if the pace was too fast. He begins the course covering the basics of physics, and from there he pretty much assumes you know what's happening and are keeping up. The textbook is expensive, don't buy it - it's online. The two midterms and finals are worth 80% of your grade and are based on material from the textbook. You are allowed a cheat sheet on the exams which is VITAL to do well on the exams so take it seriously. Studying isn't even necessary with the cheat sheet. The exams are tough but with the cheat sheet, you will succeed in the class. The weekly homework is worth 20% of your grade and is usually easy and straightforward. Honestly, I stopped attending lecture after week 5 because I knew I could handle the class without going and I had minimal physics background prior to taking this class...The grading isn't harsh and it is relatively easy to achieve an A in this class. I recommend!!!!!!!

I had to take Physics for my major and I was so scared of taking such a class. But Professor Huffman started the first day of class with a demonstration that seemed so utterly easy--I couldn't believe it. He made me really like physics, and I hated it in high school. His demonstrations were great visual tools for the concepts he taught. His lectures were to the point and clear. If you want to take a class with an intelligent, caring, funny, sweet, and organized teacher..Art Huffman is your man!
I had to take Physics for my major and I was so scared of taking such a class. I took his physics 10 class. It was great! He knows his subject really well. Sometimes it seems hard, but I had a lot of fun in the class. It's not high school physics class. You need to understand by yourself and study! Prof. Kivelson likes students' opinion and question. He doesn't grade on the curve, so it is up to you to get a good grade. Also, it is open-book test. I recommend his class.

*This is a review for Physics 11 Physics 11 with Larkin is literally one of the best classes I've ever taken. It goes through the intricacies of physics with zero math involved, so it's only concept based. Yet, by the end, you'll have a general idea of Einstein's theories, quantum mechanics, black holes, string theory, etc. Basically, the course will absolutely blow your mind and the fact that it's stripped of math will allow you to appreciate the beauty of physics without drowning yourself in the numbers. Professor Larkin himself makes the course extremely fun. He's an amazing lecturer and answers questions before you even ask. Everything he teaches is interesting. He's also very clear with the material exam wise. His powerpoints really help the lecture (although notes are still highly recommended) and he uploads study guides which will easily help you through the midterms. He makes himself extra available before midterms and thoroughly cares about his students. Do whatever you can to take physics 11 with Larkin, it is truly an eye opening experience. You will learn more about physics than you ever thought you could know.

I took Astro 3 because my counselor advised me to take an easy GE science class... Well Astro 3 with Malkan WAS NOT an easy science class. The only reason I did well in the course was because I had taken a physics class. Compared to the other Astro 3 class, Malkan seemed like a really hard professor. I ended up with an A- in the course, but I definitely had to work for it. HOWEVER, Prof. Malkan did give us fair warning about the intensity of the class. In one of his emails, I quote "That is why my section of Astro 3 teaches it as a SCIENCE COURSE (not a course about science ideas, or history and philosophy of science). Unless you are ready to THINK SCIENTIFICALLY, you should enroll in a different section, or course." Altogether he was a really good lecturer though. He is very passionate about the subject, so it's really amusing to watch and listen to him. Most of the material on his midterms & final are from past midterms (that he posts online with the answers to) and from the Mastering Astronomy homework. The only nice thing about the class is that it's 5 units, and the lab that goes along with it, always gets out early (like between 1/2 and hour to an hour early). I took Physics 10 in Spring 2002. I could never understand what Nefkens said with his accent but he was nice and tried to be fair. I honestly rarly read the book because we covered so many chapters in one week, but I went to lecture. I also went to his TA with help with the homework (DO NOT GO TO AAP BECAUSE THE TUTOR IS HORRIBLE). There is a lot of homework and only a couple of the questions are graded so you must do all of them because you never know which ones will be graded. The weekly quizzes were hard and I did horribly on them but they all came from the end of the chapter questions but it is impossible to go over all of them in a week. I did well on both midterms and I thought they were fair because they were mostly questions from old quizzes and homework. However, the final which is 45% was difficult and only partially repetitive. Yet, I still got an A in the class. Out of all the Physics 10 profs. Nefkens is not perfect but he is the easiest and nicest.

Summer 2017 - Okay I will say this as unbiased as I can... Dr. Park is the greatest teacher I have had in my 3 years at UCLA. If you are trying to take physics and pass take Dr. Park! I had no background of physics at all before taking this class and i got out with an A and was able to understand everything. Mind you I am a lazy C average student this class was absoluly amazing. He told us that people hate physics because they had a bad teacher. Well now its one of my favorite subjects because he was such a great teacher. Extremely fun.... now lets get into the real business. -There are assigned seats in the class -Takes roll EVERY class -You miss 3 lectures you will not get attendance credit, you miss 4 lectures you recieve an incomplete in the course. -I missed 3 lectures and he still let me slide -attendance 10% (discussion is optional) -homework 10% (6 homework assignments only had to turn in 4, all answers are online but doing them actually helps) -Midterm 1 15% (1st 1/3 of lecture material) -Midterm 2 15% (2nd 1/3 of lecture material after midterm) -Final...... 50% cumulative For the final the lowest grade in the entire class of 50+ was an 82%. The class was filled with highschool kids and the Proffesor is extremely funny and honestly if you need physics 10 wait to take Dr. Park all other proffesors would actually be a lil difficult. I honestly now want to take any and every class that he teaches.
