I disagree with every one of these reviews. Prof. Patel was not only a very easy Professor, but he was very concerned about student learning. To emphasize how easy he was in the grading, for both of the midterms and the final, he TOLD us the specific types of problems he was going to ask. I take it that these people who are complaining about how hard Prof. Patel was, were the ones too lazy to get up for an early class, and too socially inept to have friends who weren't such lazy pieces of shit to help them out with the given test problems. In addition to Prof. Patel telling us the types of problems he was going to ask, he set his average at a B. I had friends who thought they were failing who still pulled off a B. Plus, Patel is a boss. He owns a shit ton of US Patents, is an extremely accomplished Physicist, invented the CO2 laser, and I assume he has a smoking hot wife.

Professor Pau is super nice. Comparing her to my 6A professor, shes like heaven on earth cuz my 6A professor was really crappy. She explains all the materials very well and even with an accent, shes totally understandable. Shes funny too so I'm never asleep in her class. I rarely went to my 6A class but I went to every one of hers because they are entertaining. Having said that, her tests are very fair. She expects people to read the book, but I never did. She does test on stuff in the book that she never mentioned in class. Her curve is nice: top 15% get A's (not including A-). The only thing I hated about her tests were the Multiple Choice and the time limit (50 min). You don't get partial credit and they can be tricky. 50 min is barely enough to finish the test. I also hate, hate, hate the quizzes. Webassign quizzes and hw were just tricky and hard. HW takes a while to do and that got frustrating. 6B material is just hard compared to 6A. Elec and Mag is more complex than mechanics so not many people can understand it well. She did her best to explain but she spent too much time on waves and left little time for E/M. She rushed at the end which sucked cuz E/M is harder than waves. She tries to cover too much material in 10 weeks and thats why she had to rush. I wish she would cut some of the material out. Discussion was useless. I never went. Lab was useless too cuz it was ahead of the lecture so everyone was lost. They were fun tho but not much learning was involved. Overall I recommend her. Shes good at explaining everything clearly and generous about the grading.

Peroomian really does want everyone to get A's, and formats his course so that this is very possible. All you have to do is learn from his lecture notes, do the homework and the problems from the Sergway book and you will do well. However you have to take into consideration that if the course is extremely easy then you have to do exceptionally better than the curve on most tests in order to get an A. Don't get over confident.

Fall 2017 - My experience in Physics has been a really crappy one at UCLA, I manage to pass classes based off the knowledge I learned in high school. That said, 6B was no different. Professor Richard is a kind man, but his lectures were so boring. I realized I didn't learn anything from them like week 8 (when it was too late) and was better off teaching myself from the textbook. Tests were basically the challenging homework questions so if you did them, or knew how to do them they shouldnt have been a problem. Your grade is broken down by Homework 15% Lab 15% Midterm 1 and 2 15% and final 40%. 6B is already a hard enough topic, as is the case with most science classes, how much you learn is really based off how good your professor is. The 6 series in general is a really watered down version of the 1, but a lot of the really important conceptual ideas are lost in the process which makes life science students really miss the point about Physics. Kind of disappointing really.

I'll skip what everyone else has said and tell you what you want to know. He puts 1 question from the homework directly on the midterm (You can't argue if you miss it or don't understand it - thats fair). That leaves 3 questions for you to answer with the time you have left. The questions will require you to think. Basically, each of the 3 questions will combine concepts and ideas from different problems in the book. e.g. part a of question 1 may ask to see if you understood a concept from problem 6 of the homework and part b of question # 1 will ask to see if you understood a concept from question 22 of the homework (get the idea?). No his exams are not easy, people like him alot, including myself, thats why he got such a low level of difficulty score on his review. However he is not hard either. I would just say that he is less difficult than other professors. UNFORTUNATELY HIS FINAL EXAM IS NOT DOABLE (therefore i can not tell you what to do about that, however i regret studying for the final). Also, for the final you will have 2 problems directly from the homework on the exam so once again, if you get them wrong, you can't argue. Yes I would definetely recommend taking him. Read other comments to find out more. My grade in the class was a "B"

AVOID this professor and class!! I am taking this class currently (spring quarter 2005) and all I can say is that this class will screw up your GPA majorly. He posts his lectures up online and just reads off the notes. This gives you the impression that you don't have to show up for class but for one of the final exam problems he put a stupid demonstration problem. He is an awful teacher and the midterms and final are not fair. He did not provide any practical final so no one in the class knew what to study for. His formula sheet was a joke consisting of 100+ formulas all jumbled up in one sheet of paper making it near impossible to find the right formula (some of the formulas were even repeated!). He is also very rude during office hours and extremely unapproachable. He also gets angry during lecture for the most random thing (like coming in late or slight noises). He also seems to lose his train of thought for physics during lecture. If this isn't enough reason for you then consider the 50+ people that dropped this class during 10th week. AVOID this man like the PLAGUE.

Getting a good grade in physics with Prof. Schriver is not difficult. His exams are easy because they are essentially book problems. His teaching method is very straight forward and his class rewards diligent (not necessarily smart) work. Be warned that you may get out of the class with a good grade but not necessarily a good grasp of physics.

I took Shaked in Spring 2015. I'm going to be objective as possible saying these things, but I'll address the usual 3 main concerns with a personal opinion at the end. 1. Class Layout MT I MT II Final Exam Optional: Participation to replace one MT score Optional: One Real World Application project to replace 10% of your overall grade (and reduce your final exam from being 45% to 35% worth of your overall grade) Participation, if you choose to take it, includes: Clicker questions, Mastering Physics ‘pre flights’ (they’re like chapter overviews you have to take before she teaches the actual chapter in class, usually about 1hr+ long), HW due once a week, discussion attendance mandatory, and quizzes (I may have missed a few things, idk). Note: Shaked will drop MANY of the participation things (such as 2 of you lowest quiz scores and 6 clicker days or something like that). Many opportunities for extra credit. Piazza will be the class website you use to post questions, etc. Lecture slides will be linked through CCLE. There will be optional surveys/questionnaires you can take for extra credit (through another website). If your final exam grade is higher than your MT she’ll replace it with the final exam grade. 2. Teaching Style Shaked is all over the place in her teaching. The main issue is that she is that since she does clicker questions in her class, she will spend 5 minutes worth of class on one clicker question. She is extremely concerned with whether or not you fully understand the material, so she will spend class time to make sure everyone clearly understands it. This takes away from her clarifying other concepts and skipping through some slides so that she can stay on time. She also has OH and a platoon of TAs and peer tutors. She is not very good at explaining concepts (6B is more conceptual than 6A). She will curve generously and understands she’s not perfect right now, so she will alter things in class as time goes on in response to feedback she gets. Though this is nice, it’s also sometimes annoying because your syllabus is never really set and things always change. 3. Exam Layout She will expect you to estimate values and do calculations on your exam without a calculator. Get used to it. And it’s not 2+2 is more like (9x10^12)(1.6x10^-19). Don’t let the numbers scare you though, you’ll get used to it. Leave calculations for last. She gives you a flashcard to have your formula sheet + notes on for MTs and a sheet of paper’s worth for your final. Don’t freak out by low scores and low averages, I know lots of people aren’t physics majors but 60% as an avg is normal for a physics class. Again, she will 'curve.' Personal Opinion: I disliked her teaching style and the style of her exams. If you have not ever taken a Shaked exam, it smacks you silly. The questions in her lectures and HW doesn’t really mimic her questions on exasm. You’ll pretty much just have to take it the first time and get used to it after that. Invest in whatever freaken iClicker she asks of you. I said there’s a curve, but really it’s really an extra credit quiz based on the midterm to boost your score. It can only be taken in class and with the specific iClicker she wants, so get it. Her course material is scattered everywhere and all the crap she says is confusing. Piazza sends notifications to your email which is really annoying (even when I unsubscribed I still got them). Read her instructor’s notes, sometimes they inform you of changes and links to extra credit. Otherwise ignore her. What I did was: MT I, MT II, Final exam (because fuck all that participation it’s insane) and I missed the deadline for the RWA project. Do all of the extra credit you can. The RWA drafts and stuff are dumb, but she said she’d replace our draft scores with our final RWA score if our final one was higher. Grades: MT I (without curve): 60%. Avg: 60% MT II (without curve): 78% Avg: 70% Final (with curve): 87% Avg: 74% Final grade: A Note: I did most of her extra credit and studied very hard for the class since I took it with only the MT and Final grades. I really liked her as a person, she was a generous grader, I disliked her teaching style and methods. I got a lot of help from my friends who are good at Physics. A LOT OF HELP.

This is one of the best teachers I have ever had at UCLA. I completely didn't understand physics before I went to his class, and then all of the sudden, I was getting A's on the midterms. They were almost identical to the practice midterms, which helped I'm sure. Going to his office hours helped, of course, as well. He's very friendly, and cares a lot about his students. My favorite thing about his class was that he used "concept tests," which are multiple choice questions that help him know how much the class is understanding the information. If few people get the answer right, he'll go over the concept again. The concept tests are also helpful because they keep you awake in a class that teaches some of the most boring things I've ever learned. He also makes it more exciting by doing lots of demonstrations.
