Principles of Behavioral Neuroscience
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Requisites: course 100A, Life Sciences 2 or 7A or 15. Not open to students with credit for course M117A (or Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology M175A or Neuroscience M101A or Physiological Science M180A). Designed for juniors/seniors. Nervous system anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and their relationship to behavior. P/NP or letter grading.

I took comparative psych with him and my experience wasn't as bad as the one I had in this course. He is an absolutely rude person, and you can tell he doesn't enjoy teaching/mentoring. He expects you to know everything and grades papers very harshly. He gives close to no guidance in office hours. He spoke to me in a very condescending way and other students (I witnessed). He even made a girl cry at the end of class once. She was contemplating dropping the course from midterm paper grade, and he asked what her gpa was in front of everything. When she told him, he said "yeah, you're not going to make it." He is a jerk and although the topic was very interesting, the class was not enjoyable at all. His lectures lacked structure and it was mostly him rambling about different experiments and bragging about people he knew. Avoid this course at all costs, but if you do end up taking it, I hope you have tough skin! WORST TEACHER I'VE HAD AT UCLA and meanest!

Fall 2017 - Schein was an awesome professor! It’s clear he’s an expert (MD/PHD), especially with vision. The material is super interesting too. What I did to get an A: Go to lecture (but really, only to get clicker points). Schein goes through slides SO fast, it’s nearly impossible to understand the material or take notes. Listen to the bruincast of every lecture. Take notes while watching (pause the video anytime he says anything that may be important, which is pretty much everything). I spent 2 hours rewatching the lecture, pausing, and taking notes for each bruincast lecture. His exams are based solely off of what he says (at least 95%)! Even if it’s not on a slide, he may test on it. Make flash cards of every slide/notes before the quizzes. (I seriously made over 400 flash cards throughout the quarter. I used them to study for the quizzes and exams) That’s it. :) If you stay on top of the material, this class is very do-able. Grade breakdown: (all multiple choice, 50q) Midterm 1: 82 (average ~75) Midterm 2: 92 (average ~80) Final: 94 (average ~80) Discussion: The quizzes (basically every discussion) we’re not particularly difficult, and pretty similar to test questions. The paper is really easy, kind of a joke (3 pages, double spaced) I would definitely recommend schein! He was really funny and the class was not that difficult

Summer 2020 - tldr: take Psych 115 with Tony Ye! Professor Ye does an excellent job at explaining material in a way that's easy to understand, even without a previous neuroscience background. His exams (the midterm and final) are very straightforward. He provides study guides and as long as you can answer the questions on there you should be good to go. There are weekly quizzes that are written by the TAs, and these are more difficult than professor Ye's questions. There were a few ambiguities but he gave us points back for those questions. There were a total of 15 extra credit points possible. I highly recommend going to his office hours.
