Winter 2022 - Overall, Ayala is a super great professor and is incredibly smart about the topics he covers. The work definitely isn't easy, and you have to put in the effort to watch the lectures and take notes. The exam and midterm aren't bad at all and most of the questions are well-prepared for during the study guide. Some options will be answers like "the dodgers suck" or something hilarious. I took this class during COVID-19 so all of his lectures were recorded online, while he also gave a live lecture in person. Participation is required for discussion and lecture participation is done through weekly quizzes. The quizzes aren't bad either but you definitely need to pay attention. It's an easy A, as long as you put in the work, and there aren't many tricky questions compared to Sigmon's exams. I'd definitely recommend taking this class with Professor Ayala if you can keep up with the work. He's very underrated and IMO, he's not as bad as the other reviews say he is. If you're able to attend office hours or honors sections, he's incredibly knowledgeable and insightful.

Spring 2016 - Bargheer is so nice! The class has lots of readings since you read older works of Sociology. I got an A- for the class when I thought I was getting a B. Grades on: 3 Pop Quizzes (They are easy and won't hurt you), Midterm (In Class, 2 short ssays) and Final (Take Home, two 5 Page Essays). The readings can get difficult but the TA's will help you understand them. I think my TA was a rough grader cause I think I deserved better grades from the midterm and final lol. Take this class with Bargheer or Jepson! I hear both are good . PLFs help too if you are in AAP! I am a first year and I would recommend this class (Remember that I got an A-). I did not stress much about the class tbh

Fall 2020 - I had max for soc 102 and omg I hope I never have him again. He's so passive aggressive. He's a lot nicer during office hours but even then he makes me uncomfortable when asking questions because I thought he would explode. Him and Jepson (Soc 102 prof) together were horrible.

Summer 2020 - Professor Duran is such a great professor. The readings are so confusing but he clears everything up in lecture and makes the subjects easy to understand. His exams are super hard but all of the questions are taken out of lecture. His exams consist of multiple choice and a long answer section. Overall this class is doable and you will learn so much.

Spring 2021 - The material for this course is difficult. I felt as though Professor Ferguson always came to class in a positive mood and tried his best to make the class environment engaging, despite the dense material. He extended deadlines when many students were overwhelmed and had a fair grading scale on our essays. His lectures consisted of him talking, sometimes with a blackboard feature where he would make sparse handwritten notes. Many students would have benefitted from better visuals, but overall the lectures were fairly interesting. Professor Ferguson was pretty flexible and did a good job teaching Soc 101, which is a difficult class.

this professor is horrible. she has no concern for your grade whatsoever. her lectures are extremely long and boring. the essays, which are due the same that they are given, have the worst and unfair grading ever (all subjective). please please please, do NOT take this professor. if you actually want to learn something useful out of this class, please avoid her in every single way possible!!!

Winter 2020 - I normally don't write reviews, but this professor is awful. His lectures comprise of 10-15 minutes of actual information about the subject and the rest of the class is him ranting about current issues. His grading is awful as he only gives out a certain amount of A's, B's, and C's which means that you may get a lower score if your test is graded last even if you have the same answers as someone who got a higher grade and turned it in earlier (his tests are short answer). He is very sketchy with his grading and the final grades seemed kinda arbitrary. Also, he did not post what we got on our paper or our final which comprised about 60% of our grade, therefore I had to email him to figure out what I got. I did 1.5 points better than someone else in the class on the midterm and we got the same grades for all the other assignments and she received a B while I received an A-, so basically if you want to be graded fairly do NOT take this class. This class caused me so much frustration and I honestly have no idea how a professor like him is allowed to teach at UCLA because he is costing people their chances at grad school due to his stupid grading scale (which he refuses to explain to the students).
