Lots of readings and busy work (weekly journals + 4 experiments) and 2 essays. The essays were not bad at all, though you definitely need to show you've been doing the readings. Luckily, you don't need to do EVERY reading -- and terri knows this, but she just wants you to grasp the main ideas from every piece. She doesn't look for anything out of the ordinary or ask for crazy amounts of detail. But, you MUST be a good writer if you want to succeed in this course (and most of her other courses). Lecture is good, as she goes over a lot of the important ideas and concepts. Experiments were EXCELLENT; though they seemed dumb at first, they really did help our understanding of our selves and our relation to the things we learned in class. All in all, take a class with Anderson; you may have to work a bit, but it's definitely worth it. SHE REALLY CARES ABOUT EVERY STUDENT, SERIOUSLY!!

Winter 2019 - Dr. Collett and her TA's: super helpful, extremely engaging, and the readings are just so relevant. Yes, there is a textbook in this class, but if I had the money, I would honestly buy it. It is so interesting to see how the social construction of one's self operates in society under different theories and views. All these theories intertwine with each other and it can become addicting if you start to analyze life under a sociological lens! Reminds me why I wanted to study Sociology in the first place! Dr. Collett does a phenomenal job paralleling the concepts learned in class to everyday life. Sometimes the way she can describe a concept can get confusing since she is trying to put it on simple terms for us. Remember to be a good student and ask questions whenever this happens! To do well in the class, you have to actively engage with the readings! This is important on many different levels because you have clicker quizzes, and the midterm & final will ask how readings assigned with certain sections of the class correlate with each other. Probably sounds like a no brainer, but remember to read and take good notes of the readings. You can use your notes for the clicker quizzes, and it will help when you start to review for the midterm and final. Although the content, methodology, and the discussion of the readings of a certain day are important, knowing why the readings are assigned to each other for that day of lecture are so important - big time for the midterm and final! The last thing I have to say about Dr. Collett is that she genuinely cares about her students' success in her class. She makes sure if her students have a general understanding of what is being asked in her quizzes. If something she asks is not explicit enough, she might drop the question. She highly encourages going to her office hours in case something is not clear. Take her class! You will not regret it!

Professor Katz is not given enough credit. When I initially saw his reviews on bruin walk I was a bit nervous. After taking his course I've learned that he is a brilliant man who has a deep and sincere passion for what he is teaching and once you grasp the main concepts of his ideas, you'll do great!! He's not as hard as everyone says and he actually takes the time to talk to you and get to know you as an individual, you just can't be afraid to speak to him! He's wonderful! I took 130 and received an A-...you can too!

Professor Van Leuven is very passioniate about what she teaches. I'd easily say that she's the best professor I've had here at UCLA. She has a great way of teaching that keeps your attention (not to mention a great sense of humor) and encourages student participation. However, the workload is not easy and neither are some of the theories (although a lot of them are really interesting). She assigns a lot of weekly reading (requires 10 postings, one for every week) and you pretty much have to do all of it (well, most of it) if you want to do well in the class. Don't take this class if you don't want to think. Don't take the class if you're just expecting an easy ride. But do take it for a new experience and for someone who wants to have a professor that truly believes in what she teaches.
