Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Introduction to methods used in contemporary sociological research, with focus on issues of research design, data collection, and analysis of data. Fieldwork may be required. Letter grading.

Fall 2019 - This class was extremely doable! Professor Andalon designed it in a way to slowly build our skills with comprehensive assignments and exams. His lectures are a bit dry but overall he is a great professor! The class has one individual assignment (250 words), two other group/individual assignments (250 words minimum), one group project where he lets you work on it in class and section, a midterm comprised of 10 multiple choice questions and an essay section (2 pages), and the final is the same format as the midterm. He also provides a study guide for the midterm and final which is basically the answers on the tests themselves. There is no way that one can do less than a B in this class. In all honesty, this is the easiest class I've taken at UCLA!

This is the EASIEST class I've taken at UCLA. There's no midterm or final (only your one research paper you have the entire quarter to write). I stopped going to lecture after week 1, did none of the reading, and got an A! This was probably partly due to the fact that I'd already written a research paper for my Soc 1 class but really, she makes this class super easy. She is an awesome lecturer with a soothing voice (she sounds like a yoga instructor) and she made a huge effort to make this boring subject material fun by incorporating guest speakers who shared their research findings. She encourages students to choose research topics that interest them and asks people to share in lecture, so it's a really cool environment. Even though she claims attendance in lecture is mandatory and the TAs even threaten that you'll get penalized if they don't see you in lecture, they have no way of enforcing that in 200+ person class so you really only have to go to discussion. If the class hadn't been from 4 to 5:50, I probably would have gone but I didn't feel like being in class that late if I could get an A without going. Overall, TAKE HER! She's amazing and easy!

She will constantly tell you how college educated her family is and she shows off alot. She is a total failure. and alot depends on your TAs which for us is Xiong, Yang S and anthony alvarez which both are terrible. I don't know how they sleep at night not feeling guilty. I do NOT recomended at all.

She had a wonderful classroom structure and setting. She cared about improvement of students. I learned a great deal about sociology research. Her classroom structure allows growth, and it is straight foward. In her lectures, she is somewhat monotone, and she could probably make the lectures more life like. Nevertheless, I was able to grow and learn in her class. I recomend her!

Fall 2018 - Soc 20 is a challenging class regardless of which professor teaches it. However, professor Gaddis has an amazing curve that makes it very hard to fail the class. His exams are tough. You need to think critically about each question to answer them correctly. THERE IS NO RESEARCH PAPER. I think this is the best thing about the class. He's funny and very understanding. There is an I-clicker quiz every week, which are pretty easy for the most part. I would highly recommend.

Summer 2020 - Please take Professor Herman!! He is genuinely very kind and understanding, and his lectures are very clear. I took Soc 111 with him too, which I would also highly recommend, as he helps make complex topics a lot easier to understand. Both classes were a pleasure, and while they weren’t too difficult I feel like I learned a lot. 10/10 would recommend

Winter 2018 - Professor Jacobs is one of the best Sociology professors at UCLA. For this class we had small one page assignments scattered throughout the quarter, making them completely manageable. The midterm was a bit challenging, however, as long as you attended lecture and did the study guide she hands out you will be fine. I got a C+ on the midterm and ended up with an A-. The final paper is based on qualitative research and while it can be challenging I recommend meeting with her during office hours.

He was a really good professor. I enjoyed his lectures. His study guide for the midterm and final are really thorough and practically everything he says during lecture so if you did miss a class or did not do the reading, it's covered with the study guide. But it's better to do the reading and go to lecture since more of his test questions are not so much definitional but require you to use what you know (such as definitions of terms) and be able to apply it! A bit challenging, but great professor!
