Prof. Allen knows his stuff well but in order to do well in the class you have to at least the theme of the 10 books assigned and the extra credit offered. DO IT ALL! We learn the main themes of the books through his lectures and through actually reading them. Also during lecture, he keeps everyone awake because either he has an interesting film for us to see or he might randomly call on you to answer a question. Many have been fortunate not to be picked on to answer a question though. I learned a whole lot about the African American community and how they affect the world we live in. Also the TA, Rob, clarified many questions we had that the teacher just couldn't do. The professor and TA are very intellectual guys that believes the students can read any type of book...we had a few grad books in are readings but made it through. They only thing I would say is wait until your soph. year to take this if you are not a soc. major or anything related to the field.

Winter 2016 - This professor, overall is funny, passionate, and really into what he's teaching but because he's these things it means he's a fast talker and will often go through slides really fast. Most of the information on the slides are important dates and events but what he is saying is a lot more important. He does not give sit-down tests, rather he gives take-home essays as the midterm and final, BUT BEWARE. The main things for these tests is that you should definitely READ ALL THE READINGS to know which to choose for your arguments. The essay prompts are really broad and require you to use two or more of the readings referred to in class, beyond that its all you. For the grading of the tests the TAs are told to take away more points for grammar than for content.

I didn't go to class much so I can't say anything useful about Moore as a lecturer. However, I can say that she writes very reasonable exam/essay questions. I got an A in the class despite only doing the first half of the readings for the quarter and missing about half the lectures. Take Sociology M5 if you want an easy and yet very interesting GE.
