Psych 100A with Prof. Jaffe was great! He made the material interesting and was always willing to help if you came to him. To succeed in this class, keep up with the material and utilize your peers! The powerpoints and book are awesome study tools. I HIGHLY recommend taking 100A with Jaffe.

I have never taken a statistics class before this one but using the book, it's pretty straightforward and easy to figure out yourself. Going to class is good because sometimes he slips questions from things he's talked about in class on the multiple choice midterms, but it isn't too helpful. The TA's for this class were really good, they helped outline things very straightforwardly but I feel like Jaffe always went on tangents. I've heard he's better than other professors, so he's probably the best option, but this class isn't going to change your life.

Jaffe is a great professor and nice human but the course structure was unnecessarily challenging for the statistics you actually need to know for Psych for 100b. I do not feel I'm better off for knowing all the formulas I know now because the important thing to know is when to use which tests in 100b and beyond- the computer does the rest and I'm frustrated I spent sooo much time energy and stress to do well in his class. There are easier professors and their students don't flounder later.

I appreciated his humor and personality, but in terms of teaching he is subpar. Often times difficult subjects were glossed over, while he went on an anecdote about his addiction treatment center. Also, his slides are atrociously bad and not informative.

Prof Jaffe is such as cool down to earth guy, and he knows how to make the lectures engaging and funny. I would not say that he is a bad teacher at all, like a lot of other people here said. This is a just hard class to teach, and no one takes this class voluntarily, they just take it to get into the major. I think that that is why no one likes this class. Overall, Jaffe made the lectures fun to go to. It was very manageable. There is no homework, just one or two online quizzes due each friday. There's two midterms and a final. 50 multiple choice questions. They are not cumulative. The thing that helped the most was reading the book that corresponds with the lectures. He covers everything pretty quickly in lecture because there is a lot of material, so you will not do very well unless you read the book to further understand the lectures. There's also an online supplement that you can purchase that will give you extra practice problems and mini lectures, but it is not necessary as long as you use the book's practice problems.

Everyone in the class was always miffed at Jaffe for one reason or another. There was the time the quiz questions took way too long to do and had nothing to do with stats. There was the time an essay question on the test (which Reese wrote, of course) was an abbreviation that Jaffe hadn't mentioned, and he refused to throw it out (he EVENTUALLY did). Then for the next test, Jaffe said he would write the essay portion himself, and it turned out to be waaaay harder than what Reese's class had. And then there was the one EC point he offered if half the class turned in reviews for him and both the TAs, that was fun...
Overall it was pretty disappointing. I always felt like Reese's class didn't have to jump through the hoops we had to. If you want to be amused by his stories and cute kids and learn a little bit about his work, go for it. If you want to learn stats, I wouldn't take it with Jaffe if I had a better choice.

Tip to succeed in 100A: The textbook and personal trainer (supplemental online stuff) are your best friend. USE THEM BOTH.

Jaffe is down to earth and makes the class enjoyable. He seems very busy with his rehab clinic so it felt like lectures would be cut short. He spends a lot of time going over more basic concepts and the TEXTBOOK and PERSONAL TRAINER is where you will really get how to succeed on the test. When I took it, the other professor, Reise made the tests and they were based on the book publisher (Hurlburt). So I'd say definitely read your chapters well. For me, going to lecture was important because even though I was confused much of the time -- that confusion became the basis for me to get a general idea of what we're learning. Then I'd look into the book to understand further. Multiple choice tests, with few free response questions. Tests are more conceptual than computational, so know your concepts. If the book goes beyond the basic content to explore an abstract view of the content, pay attention. Those little things became test questions.

Use your book and personal trainer and you'll be fine! Jaffe was also very helpful in office hours, he'd also share things with us in office hours about the test that he wouldn't say in front of the class. Wish I went more, good luck!
