I can't believe the bad ratings for this class!
Dr. Galvan is by far one of the best professors I've had at UCLA, she is extremely knowledgeable, and makes the class incredibly engaging. If you have any interest at all in developmental psychology, you will have a blast!
The material is pretty simple and straightforward. Even when it comes to specific experiments that you need to know, she goes above and beyond to simplify them! Tells you EXACTLY what you need to know for the exam, and which details you can skip.
She summarizes the main points of the assigned readings, so you essentially DON'T EVEN NEED TO READ THE BOOK, although it's very interesting and easy to read
Yes, some of her multiple choice answers are somewhat tricky, and getting an A+ in the class could hinge on getting lucky with one of them; but an A is ABSOLUTELY ATTAINABLE with decent-to-minimal effort.
If you put NO EFFORT and expect to get a straight A, you'll probably end up coming back here and be one of the weiners who give Dr. Galvan a bad rating rather than owning up to your lack of effort.
100% do not trust this grade distribution. This is a great class and honestly one of my favorite ive taken so far at ucla but the test are very hard. I studied a lot and still almost failed both midterms.
Professor Galvan is such a sweetheart! She is so understanding and really cares for student learning. I’m going to be honest it was hard paying attention in class half the time, but when you go over the material it is super interesting. She clarifies any questions and engages with the students all the time. We had 3 tests. The final was made optional because of the COVID-19 situation. THANK YOU! There were quizzes every lecture, but it was just based on participation and you could miss 3. If you gave her a possible exam question that she chose, that would count as your own extra credit point! To do well in the class, I recommend recording each lecture and taking notes that you missed after the class and just studying the slides. I would highly recommend taking the class or any class with Professor Galvan if you have the chance!
Dr. Galvan's Psych 161 is an interesting class encompassing many aspects of the human brain's development. Definitely worth taking it as your elective. Her lectures are very engaging, definitely not boring. The exams are very fair. She is not out to trick her students. She doesn't assign a textbook, because she wants to save us students some money. Instead, her exams rely heavily on lecture both what she says and on the slides themselves. Do not underestimate even the smallest detail in the slides. Instead of the textbook she posts/assigns research articles which she find relevant to her lecture material. Definitely read those too. Study efficiently and nothing should come as a surprise on her exams. She is a great professor simply wanting her students to learn and do well.
Some of the reviews for other classes Dr. Galvan teaches like 160 and 161 have pretty negative reviews. However, this was by far my favorite class I have taken at UCLA (I'm a senior). Dr. Galvan is super approachable, transparent, and passionate about the subject. She is also funny and makes coming to class enjoyable. Her tests are extremely fair if you simply put in the work to study for them; she is not out to trick you. You also DO NOT have to read the articles she provides because she only tests on lecture material. She goes over the important aspects of the articles during class. There are quizzes at the beginning of every class but they are only graded on completion. We also go over the quizzes right after we take them. Dr. Galvan was nice enough to make the final optional during the coronavirus outbreak which made classes go virtual. Overall, if you have the opportunity to take a class with Dr. Galvan, do it! I am bummed I didn't take a class with her earlier, but I am glad I was able to before graduating.
