The class material really isn't that hard. Professor Ankowski is a clear and helpful professor and attending lectures helps clarify concepts. However, your grade in this class depends almost entirely on your TA. I had an A+ on both the exams but my TA, Akila Kadambi brought down my grade a lot. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER. She often contradicted herself and graded people based on who she liked instead of on the quality of their work. She was also very unorganized and we often went over the 2 hour lab time. I had another class right after and used to get delayed because of her. Overall, the class is actually really great and I learned a lot. Be careful of your TA though, they can make or break your grade in this class!

I liked Professor Ankowski. Her lectures were really engaging, and she always gave vivid examples to illustrate the abstract concepts. You can sense that she is dedicated to her profession and cares about the students. The test was fine, I only studied 40 minutes before the final and got 34/40.
However, I HATED the lab session. I got a nice TA, but I just do not like how this whole thing works. The experiment part was so emotionally draining and tedious. I felt so desperate because no matter how hard I tried to improve my paper, I still got a big chunk of scores taken off for a variety of reasons. Also, the writing center closed for the first week of session C, during which the final paper was due, so I was all alone struggling.
If you are going to take it, either take it during a normal school quarter, or take it in the summer and DO NOT TAKE ANY OTHER CLASS. There's a LOT of materials, for both the lecture and the lab. I was doing an internship, taking another class while being tortured by this lab session, it was so depressing.

This class gave me such bad anxiety but i ended up doing pretty good.
I recommend taking this class over summer so you dont have any other courses to focus on... the lab portion is time-consuming

honestly I am soooo glad this class is over finally, you dont really know how youre doing until the grades are posted

The lectures were interesting but the exam material was extremely difficult. There were no slides so you really had to pay attention in class and they tested on material that wasn't covered in class, just in the textbook. The TAs are told to give bad grades on every assignment so there is a curve, but the curve doesn't help much. The rubrics are pretty unfair and APA formatting is a big part of your lab grade. Attending lab is 100% necessary but lectures could probably be skipped if you read the whole textbook

I looooovvvveee Professor Ankowski. She is so passionate, knowledgeable, and made an already super interesting topic even more interesting. Work load wise, I'd say this class doesn't require too much effort. There are 6 8-point homework assignments that are pretty easy, I got an 8/8 on most of them with little effort. The tests are sorta challenging, I got a 90 on both and I didn't read the textbook. I feel like if I had read it I probably could have done better, but I didn't have time. If you know the definitions/experiments from lecture well you will do well in this course. I made quizlets and that's all I did to study and it worked out pretty well. Overall, TAKE THIS CLASS. She made me want to come to lecture... it was genuinely engaging and just a super enjoyable experience.

Dr. Ankowski's class is awesome. Her class was so worth getting up extremely early for. Not only is she an excellent lecturer but her slides are awesome too. I like the fact that she posts them ahead of time so we could writes notes on them or follow her clearly during lecture. The book she chose is pretty straight forward. Her system of grading is fair and she allows for 4 extra credits if you volunteer for psych lab which was a huge help in the end! This class is one of the very few classes I was sad had to come to an end! She passionate about the subject and it overflows to her students!

I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would. I expected Language Development to be a somewhat dry or boring topic, but Professor Ankowski made it interesting and applicable to real life. The class consisted of two non-cumulative exams (no final) and 6 short papers (350-450 words). Extra credit was given for participating in psychology studies. No participation or attendance grades. The exams were all multiple-choice questions and I found them to be straight-forward and easy, if you studied. She asks some questions on material that is in the textbook but not covered in lectures, so reading the textbook before exams is necessary to get those questions correct. The short papers were also pretty easy - they usually asked you to reflect on or connect concepts from the textbook to your own life. I would definitely recommend this class and this professor.

Ankowski is great! Her classes do not fill quickly because she usually teaches 8AMs - I took 133C and 133B with her and got As in both with minimal effort. She's very engaging and loves to talk to students/give advice. If I could take the rest of my major classes with her, I would.
