*Another thing. I had this godly TA called Natee Pitiwan who got me through Chowdhury's class. I heard he's not TAing the class again this winter but he helped me so much by explaining the concepts well and grading a little bit more leniently. My grade today was because of him. If you ever see a class taught by him as a TA, take him. You won't regret it.

She's aight. Just study the homework, know how to do everything in the homework which is very hard to do by your self. I suggest getting the answers from a previous quarter or going to every office hour. Got a A- on the first midterm failed the second and got somewhere around a A on the final not sure...but got an A- for the class.

Reasons why I chose this class:
I suck at Calc. I nearly failed out of my Calc BC class in high school. I'm not a superman, no Dwight Howard. I wanted to take 3A, but I had no choice because my Calc AP score placed me into this class. So I had 2 choices: Dearricott or Chowdhury. Obviously, you guys who read this review have also looked up Dearricott and seen how horrendous the reviews are. Chowdhury has no reviews. Boom, take the chance and leggo.

The Professor:
Her teaching style may or may not be what you are used to. She tend to go over proofs and concepts during class and allow you to think about the concepts you learned when doing the homework. To me, I do not like this type of teaching because I do not see how it relates back to my midterm and final. Her homework is extremely challenging and if you do not go to discussion, you will not do very well in this class, unless you are naturally talented at probability. If you're a normal joe like me, then my advice to you is to go to TA office hours and discussions. She is extremely cranky in the mornings during her office hours. Seeing how her class this winter is in the afternoon, perhaps her mood will change.

The Class itself:
I didn't go to about 75% of the lectures. Reasons behind this:
1. Didn't wake up in time.
2. Did not find class engaging.
3. Read the book to find out what I needed to know and missed.
4. All classes are on bruincast

As far as grading is concerned, the class is either 10% homework, 20% midterm 1, 20% midterm 2, 50% final OR 10% homework, 20% better of midterm 1 or 2, and 70% final. Lowest homework is dropped.

Now that you've heard all this from me, you probably want to hear what I got in the class right? An A-. Surprising right? For the effort I put in to the class, I am quite satisfied with my score. My score breakdown was:

100 on homework
A on midterm 1
C on midterm 2 (average was like a 57)
87 on final.

*the most interesting things is that my C on midterm 2 actually ranked higher than my A on midterm 1, leading me to believe my A on midterm 1 got dropped when calculating my score.

Advice:
1. Go to office hours of the TA
2. Find a bunch of friends to work with. (Personally my group of friends formulated a group called Team Elaine)
3. If you have better things to do, don't go to class
4. If you failed, chill, everybody else did too.
5. Review the homework for the final, lots of problems are repeats.
6. Average for the class is a C+ as far as letter grading is concerned. If you don't get an A, this is college, get over it. You will need to land in the top 25% of the class to get an A. Just an FYI

Hope my advice will get you through the class. Put in the effort you might get an A. Land on the bad side of the curve for the final, you might get a C. Watch out.

Hello,
I took this course fall 2012, her first year teaching. Chowdhury is better than all other math 3c professors, so if you have a chance to take her, DO.

You will have one homework assignment each week worth 10% of your grade, they are challenging, but if you go to TA office hours they do the homework for you basically so you should be fine. Just make sure you understand the homework at the end of the day thoroughly.

Midterms: you will have two of these and if you just study the homework and do book problems you should be fine. each is worth 20% of your grade. if you do horribly on one, she will drop it and just count the better score.

Final: if she counted each of your midterms 20% each, your final will be 50% of your grade; if she only counted one of your midterms, the final will be 70% of your grade. The final was extremely easy, she will give you specific homework problems to study for the final, the book is not necessary to study for the final.

Her lectures consist of proofs, but its necessary to understand how equations are derived in case you forget during the exam and have to re-derive.

everything is podcasted.

I got an A on the midterm, A+ on homework, F on second midterm [my class average was a fail] , and B on the final and got an A in the class.

Loved having her as my math professor this quarter. It's my last class in the math series I need to fulfill for my major, so it was a nice surprise to have a fluent-English-speaking, nice/humorous, understanding/good teacher.

She occasionally tied in our majors into what we were learning by bringing in outside studies conducted to show us that statistics does actually have a place in our curriculum. Some teachers tried to do this by using the problems in the book/by putting problems on the test about it, but in all honesty they would do it so frequently and calculatingly that it would become stale and very tiresome.

Professor Chowdhury (ever since the first class of the quarter) exuded a more genuine demeanor than the other math professors I have had here. She told us from the get-go that her exams
are fair and indeed, her exams are very very very fair. You can tell that her exams were written more to test our conceptual understanding rather than "plug and chug" or "I'm out to get you with these really ridiculously meticulous problems just to see how you fare".

Although I do not yet know my final grade, I can say that the exams were nothing any of the students can complain about. Her homework that she
writes herself was in my opinion much more difficult than the exams were, and to boot, the homework was graded fairly leniently, so we were in theory amply prepared for what was on her tests.

However I must say that in her lectures it was hard to ask questions because she was busy trying to teach us the
material for that week-- which is fair, this quarter was short and most of the time the student questions were more questions of "can you repeat that" rather than a truly helpful question. But I think if a little time was included to pause and ask if there are any questions, it would facilitate learning.

The textbook was a useful supplement.

Although Professor Chowdhury seems to be a new professor, she was very effective and I'm sure over the years she will improve even more as an instructor. It was great to have
her as an instructor.

Lectures:
I found Professor Chowdhury's lectures to be utterly useless. They started off okay: she would try to tie things back to real life examples and gambling games which was quite interesting. However, the hour soon turned into her doing proof after proof after proof which left me with no understand of the material and how to go about doing the problems. Everything I learned about 3C, I learned from AAP and teaching myself from the book. Sometimes, I even found myself wondering if it was worth going to class. I literally felt like I got nothing out of the hour. After the class was over, she sent us an email saying she was totally "flummoxed" as to why we didn't appreciate her lectures devoted to theory. From what I've heard, despite her evaluations, she hasn't changed her teaching style one bit. Professor Chowdhury just doesn't understand what her students need.

Homework:
I found the homework to be extremely difficult and discouraging. Because it was so hard, and intimidating, I would usually wait until my TA did it and then just blindly copy what they wrote on the board with no understanding of what was going on. I did pay attention, but the concepts highlighted in her homework were usually (with the exception of several problems) so difficult that I was unable to glean any understanding from them. Since I was unable to attempt any problems by myself, I felt like I got little to no practice with the material unless I did unassigned problems from the book. Several times, even the TAs had difficultly understanding how to do some of the homework problems.

Office Hours:
Professor Chowdhury chose to make her office hours 8 AM. That's fine- professors can choose to make their office hours whenever they want. The issue I had with Professor Chowdhury is that she would often send us an email at midnight or later the night before to cancel.(once, she even canceled her office hours at 6 AM). It was extremely frustrating to set my alarm, get ready, and then read my email and realize that she, once again, canceled her office hours. The times I did go, they weren't too helpful.

Outfits:
I don't mean to sound like a prude, but Professor Chowdhury's outfits really bothered me. Her bra straps would continually fall down during class and it was really distracting. Also, she often wore clothes that were slightly see-through, and miniskirts. I probably would have taken her more seriously, had she dressed more professionally.

Exams:
She claimed that her midterms were "a gift". Let me tell you: they were not a gift. The first one had an average so high you couldn't afford to make a single mistake. And the second one was extremely long and difficult. No one finished. The final was difficult as well.

Ameera left the country, so yeah...nothing matters on this page anymore. Fun fact she had the TA's watch us for a bit as she took a nap during our final.

All her homework problems involved eating at fast food joints, it made me hungry dammit!

So I'm gonna break this review into parts of the teaching and class.

Lectures: I only went to lectures til 3rd week then stopped going because it was boring and everything is podcasted. You don't even have to watch the entire podcast, just look for the specific times when she does a problem that is similar to the ones on the homework. Unless you're the type of student that takes amazing notes during lectures, just save yourself time and podcast/skim everything.

Assignments: The homework is 10% of the grade and is extremely hard to do by yourself. She pretty much designed it so that students were forced to go to office hours if they wanted an A on the hw grade. However, this greatly prepares you for the midterm and final.

Exams: There are two midterms (20% each) and a final (50% or 70% depending on the grading scheme). If you fail one of the midterms horribly then you'll probably go with the grading scheme where the final is worth 70% and that midterm is dropped. Anyway, to study for the midterm, I highly suggest you work out the homework problems and the midterm review. Trust me, if you do at least that and understand the problems, you'll get at least a B on the midterm. For my first midterm, the last two problems were exactly like two problems of the homework except the numbers were changed. I ended up getting a curved B on that one. For the second midterm, it was definitely harder. To clarify, the average for the first midterm was 64% but for the second midterm it was 44%. But because I studied my homework like crazy before the second midterm I got an A on it. As for the Final, just review every single homework question and find past finals. There were like 2 homework question and a past final question that I recognized on my final which made it a whole lot easier. The average for the final was 53%.

Overall, my (curved) scores were as follow: B on midterm 1, A on midterm 2, A on final, A on homework. Ended up with an A. Keep in mind that I only went to 25% of the lectures because I thought they were hella boring and they were all podcasted anyway.

TL;DR Go to office hours for homework help. Review homework for midterm/final. Take it with chowdhury, its not that time consuming and if you put in the effort to understand the homework, you'll be fine.
