The last review seems to be a bit salty about their grade this Summer. I understand that there are some people who simply aren't good with a little bit of math. However, please do not use "international students" as an excuse for your inability to use the equations sheet that Ainsworth PROVIDES for each test. I don't often write reviews for classes, but after reading the last comment how could I not.
Pros: Equations sheet provided in class, Book is provided online and FREE, no homework, tests are non-cumulative.
"Pop quizzes" this summer were merely to get you attendance points for lecture. I literally had 1/5 on the 2nd pop quiz (out of 2 quizzes we had) and still received full points for the quiz portion of the grade.
Cons: Email responses weren't very timely nor helpful.
Overall, reading the book will help you on some multiple choice questions, but as long as you master the equations then you will be fine. For the midterm, read the probability section of the book which will get you a few points on MC. The midterm covered the basics of math in general (SD, mean, median, mode, etc. some probability, and t-tests and z-scores) The final was pretty much only about ANOVA's with some correlation/regression. This is a reasonable amount of subjects for a class with only a midterm and a final. Just know what information is being provided and which equation is appropriate for the Short Answer portions of the tests.
tldr: Easy if you are relatively good at math. "Hard" if you don't know how to use equations and don't pay attention to what symbols mean.
Dr. Ainsworth will tell you that his exams are VERY difficult, but that's the furthest thing from the truth. The majority of the multiple choice and true/false questions on the exams require you to understand the concepts presented in the slides at surface level, while only a few questions test your deeper understanding of the material. The practice problems he gives you on the practice midterm/final resemble the difficulty of the exam. I would strongly suggest memorizing how to do those problems, as a few of them will show up on the midterm. In terms of the midterm, he doesn't lecture much about probability, but a lot of questions are based on basic probability concepts. The math in this class does not go beyond addition/subtraction/multiplication/division/square roots/squaring, so you should be more than fine with little to no math background. The equations for ANOVA and the sample testing can be a lot, but he gives you all the tables and equations you need on the exam.
This class was a drag and bore. I hated every minute of it. Most summer classes are easy, but this one just was not. The professor spends more time telling you about his time at CSUN and gets off topic real easily. There is no homework or assignments. just graded on tests and attendance.
The tests are extremely and I mean extremely hard even though there is a curve, it's bull. His grading scale is also pretty wack.
Midterm and final weigh the same. The pop quizzes are not easy cause if you dosed off in class you're screwed. Never had enough time to actually complete the quizzes either.
He’s a little boring, but if you’ve taken AP stats you will be fine. Even if you haven’t, all the concepts are simple enough that you can khan academy it. He’s very chill and he says his exams are hard, but I didn’t think so? It’s like 10 true/false, 30 or so MCQ and a handful of short answer, with sizeable EC. He has an online study guide (or at least my TA did) and it just had run of the mill practice problems you could find online. Also
TLDR it wasn’t awful I wouldn’t worry about it if you know even a little bit of stats
This class is not as easy as the review before me may suggest. The class is based on a curve and if you perform at the class average on the mid-term or final, you get a C on the exam. I was able to perform above average the first time by 0.54 on the mid-term and then by 1.20 on the final so I got a B on the mid-term and a borderline A on the final. I did the SONA extra credit which is 3 points added on the final. For the mid-term he asked one extra credit question which was worth 5 points max; it asked for the probability of getting a “Royal Flush” in a deck of cards. I didn’t get the right answer on this extra credit question but I worked out the question and explained my reasoning. However, the TA gave me a 0/5 on the extra credit which I found a bit harsh, as the professor was lenient on the extra credit on the final. It is not an all or nothing problem, but the TA graded it that way. On the Final I got 7/10 on the extra credit, which was 2 5-point questions. Looking back, the final was way easier than the mid-term so focus on the mid-term. The professor is generally alright though his lectures can be a drag. Good luck guys and I hope this review helps you all planning to take this class with this professor in the future.
