RE: GE CLUSTER 20A, 20B: Interracial Dynamics Brenda Stevenson is my hero. First, she's the chair of the history department, which is bada*$. Second, she is a very engaging lecturer and has a great sense of humor. While I dreaded the sleep-inducing lectures of Decker and Ortiz (and the other one, whose name escapes me...really sweet lady but not memorable at all), I really looked forward to Stevenson's lectures, because she incorporated relevant media (movies, music, etc) and interacted with us as much as possible. One of the highlights of my freshman year (and probably of my entire career at UCLA) was when she dressed up as a Black Panther for class one day— afro, trench coat, and a "Free Weezy" t-shirt (maybe a Huey Newton one would have been more authentic, but Stevenson does an excellent job of relating to her students).Third and final, she is writing a book about the Latasha Harlins case— an incident that seems to get overshadowed by the Rodney King riots, but that is critically important to an understanding of race relations in Los Angeles. Judging by the quality of her article (which we had to read for this class), the book promises to be a very good one, and I can't wait to read it. In conclusion, Stevenson makes two quarters of GE 20 totally worth it. (Also, this is kind of irrelevant to her quality as a professor, but she's always working out in the Wooden Center, and she watches E! and other reality TV.. she's just so hip.. I want to be her when I grow up).

she's funny! i liked her the most of all the lecturers for the cluster. BUT i still didn't like this cluster. and i'm sure most people in general wouldn't suggest clusters. first quarter was basically pre-20th century US history--the same thing we've been taught since 3rd grade. not exactly my cup of tea. just a bunch of boring essays. you can find better ways to fulfill your GE requirements, i'm sure of it.

DUDE SHE ROCKS!! she is so sweet, and helpful. i loved her class. shes kind, and fair. 1 presentation, 1 midterm, and 1 final paper. shes really nice, and helpful. the presentation was based on the reading for week. 1 presentation a week, 1 group about the weekly reading. GET CREATIVE its get you more points! the midterm she gave us a study guide and went over it with us that same day. she gave 12 possible terms and 4 essays. The final paper was a little tough since it was a research paper chicago format, but it was not as bad as i thought. she helped me narrow down my paper idea. Shes great so take her if you can!

Winter 2018 - I am truly saddened that this class had to end. I woke up every morning for this 8am class, excited to get to lecture and engage with the material Stevenson had prepared. The midterm was fair, in order to do well you needed to study but if you did, you were very much rewarded. The final paper is 10 papers but she gives you plenty of time, resources, and personal assistance for you to succeed and write a proper paper. I would take this class again, and again! I truly hope I get to work with Stevenson again. I will miss this class!
