One of the best professors in UCLA and in the Spanish and Portuguese department with all honesty. Carla Suhr is extremely dedicated, kind, and genuinely wants to see her students succeed. I am so fortunate to have taken this class with her. Although the class is three hours long and can get tiring after a while, it is well worth taking her class and experiencing your service learning with her class. We were given an extra credit opportunity but pretty sure that was just random and not every quarter. Supposedly was worth 5% but was only given 3%, which is unfair considering there was effort required in the actual extra credit.

Profesora Suhr is a very open-minded, sweet individual that makes you reflect on yourself and the society we live in. The hardest part of the class is organizing and dedicating time for the organization you want to volunteer at, but other than that it was very straightforward!

Profesora Suhr really cares about student learning- she seeks out time to meet with each student individually and if you want to improve your Spanish this is a great class for it. The service learning element of the class can be time consuming (although virtual service during COVID-19 in some ways made this easier), but overall the workload is not too bad. There are some group presentations and essays, but no tests/quizzes.

(REVIEW FOR SPANISH 3, NOT 2)

Professor Suhr is very average. She definitely wants to see students do well, and is a nice enough lady, but doesn't go above and beyond from a teaching standpoint. She also definitely wants everyone to put the effort in towards getting an A (even though obviously a lot of people take it P/NP), and she will sometimes deliberately grade you down a little bit if you're not putting in what she deems is enough effort. When push comes to shove though, she'll get you through the course in one piece and (unless you REALLY don't try, and make a point of it) she won't fail you.

Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: A

One of my favorite classes, period.

Spanish minor here, not latino, subpar Spanish.

This class is graded on attendance, 2 group projects, three reflections, and a final reflection.

The class lecture itself is not a lot of work, the reflections are only 2 pages double spaced, the group projects need very little preparation if you are able to speak Spanish well, and she's really lenient about tardiness (one girl was literally late to her final presentation). An A on her syllabus is a 94, I got a 92.5 raw score in the class and still ended with an A so she might curve. Nevertheless, even if I got a lower grade I would still highly recommend this course.

The part that is time consuming is going to site. When you're picking a place I highly recommend that you pick somewhere close. Remember that you'll be going there often and you need 60 hours total (its 80 but she gives you 20 hours free to account for transportation), so you will need to get there somehow and that price adds up, especially if you go to a dangerous neighborhood and need to Uber at night. Also in LA roundtrip commutes can be 2hours+. Honestly though, I loved my site and went often. It was about 20 minutes away (40 via bus) so it was chill. I continue to go even though I'm done with this class because I liked it so much. It's nice to be able to interact with people in the community and see first hand the things you're learning about in class.

The class itself is structured on real, everyday problems in the latino community. She does do a lot of language help, however, which is a bit redundant if you're already perfectly fluent in Spanish. It helped me a lot though. Out of all the Spanish classes I've taken at UCLA though, this is the one that has improved my Spanish the most. Its a small class and you have to speak in Spanish during class and during site (I didn't really since I had to tutor kids), so your Spanish improves a lot.

Professor Suhr is also super awesome, caring, and clearly passionate about her work. I never went to any office hours, but she's very responsive to emails. I was on the waitlist and she just emailed everyone PTEs without asking.

All in all, TAKE THIS CLASS.

I highly encourage students to take Dr. Carla Suhr's Service Learning courses. The reason being, is that it is incomparable to other courses. Her courses expose the students to real life experiences outside of the classroom setting. It is one of the courses that a student will utilize in their life skills even after they graduate. It provides early exposure to various fields of interest. This is convenient student because the student obtains the opportunity to intern with a particular field of interest and can make the early judgement on whether or not it is a field they would like to pursue. Through this course and through the exposure it provides students engagement in networking, time management, group work, self discipline, and much more. This professor is very passionate about her work and will go out of her way to provide educational resources for her students as needed. I fully enjoyed her course and way of teaching, which is why I continued to take her for the following quarter in 172 SL. Through these courses my passion was enhanced through the exposure that i had in my field of interest. Which is why I highly recommend students to take this course and 172 SL. Dr. Carla Suhr is a leader who creates leaders.

I took Spanish 2 with Dr. Carla Suhr and it was a wonderful experience. I appreciated that Dr. Suhr corrected students’ pronunciation to the benefit of her students and the class. She made these comments in the most polite way, seamlessly adding to the conversation. Besides being a skillful communicator and Spanish professor, Dr. Carla Suhr is also a very kind person. I not only felt comfortable approaching her after and outside of class, but also enjoyed each interaction. I enjoyed Spanish 2 so much that I made sure to take Spanish 3 with Dr. Suhr as well.
