Before I begin, I'm selling the 4th edition of Social Psychology (PDF version) by Gilovich for $15. If you're interested, send a text to (805) 319-2567. I accept Venmo, PayPal, and physical cash in person.
She's a great professor. The class wasn't too difficult nor was it too easy; just right. She provides slides before class even starts and also offers extra credit (SONA). The textbook is necessary because she would occasionally test material from the text that isn't taught in lecture. Honestly if you just read the text and not go to class you'll do fine. Overall a good professor, no BS like other professors out there (looking at you Firstenberg).
Overall, I would take a class again with Professor Parkinson! She was very clear and accommodating of students, and genuinely listened to feedback and implemented changes. In Fall 2021, her course was based on the following:
1. Weekly one-pagers (short and simple, based on the lectures/readings)
2. 3 exams
The class was entirely asynchronous, which is probably the biggest downside as it was slightly disconnecting, but I knew what I was getting into when I signed up for that. Attendance is optional, and the workload was very reasonable.
Professor Parkinson was wonderful! She was super engaging and attentive to students even though her class was online. She was super patient and understanding, and she makes the textbook feel worth reading as well. Highly recommend!
Great professor, and the material in very interesting. I took classes on Zoom, and she was very good about posting recorded lectures. She was very clear and engaging, and lectures were interesting and included short, relevant videos.
This class was AMAZING. It was not only incredibly interesting but also the easiest class I've ever taken at UCLA. Professor Parkinson was awesome. I HIGHLY recommend taking this class.
This class was so interesting! Not to mention well organized with a very favorable grading scheme. Professor Parkinson uses two stage exams which allow you to get back some points on questions missed. I feel this helped me learn the material more deeply as well. Just a great class! Definitely take!
Carolyn was seriously the best. She is such a clear lecturer and breaks down concepts to make them easy to understand. I took it spring 2020 so this quarter she uploaded lecture videos by concept which was super helpful. participation in discussion is required for your grade, including 3 reflection papers that are due at various dates throughout the quarter. the tests were tricky, you really had to read what it was asking, and some questions required that you had read the textbook and not just rely on the lecture material. in all, this class was really interesting and i recommend!
Very boring lectures and towards the end of the quarter, many people stopped going to class. Although it is boring, the material itself is interesting and exams aren't too bad, but be prepared to take the exam in groups.
I expected this to be a great class but I HATED this class. The material was interesting but it was presented in a way that made me hate social psychology. I did my best to have a good attitude all quarter but it was a struggle.
It's NOT all definitions: its also applying definitions to situations. I saw that review here and followed the advice of pure memorization and it didn't suit me well on the first exam.
you do have to read the textbook, and participation in discussion is required.
overall i'd take it with someone else.
