Professor Feramisco is a really nice and supportive professor. The class requires you to write and deliver four speeches in total, along with one written analysis essay. Since it was online, you were required to upload a recording of you delivering the speech. If she can tell you put in the effort, you will do well in this class. Attendance is graded, so you need to show up. She has mini group presentation assignments in class that started out stressful, but eventually became fun as you get to know your classmates. This class is not difficult, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to take COMM1.

Overall, this class was an easy A. Professor Feramisco was an okay lecturer who got the job done. Her lectures were kind of boring, but they were the basics of communication that most people should know through common sense, so I often found myself not really paying attention and just going on my phone. Her lectures require participation, but unless if you're stuck in groups to present a mini presentation, they don't require you to put much mental effort in.
Her class mainly consists of giving 4 different speeches and 1 written analysis paper.
The first speech is a Introduction Speech (5-6 minutes recorded) where you literally just talk about anything that you think represents you.
The second speech is an Informative Speech (5-6 minutes recorded) where you give random facts about a topic of your choice.
The third speech is a Persuasive Speech (5-6 minutes recorded) where you persuade someone to believe your case about a topic of your choice.
The fourth speech is a Ceremonial/Special Occasions Speech where you give an award to someone in your class and give a speech accepting an award.
The written analysis is a 4-5 page analysis of a speech (you're given the Youtube video links to 2 different speeches to choose from) and rate how well the speaker presented it.
The professor grades super easily, so if you just do the assignments, you'll have an A in the class.
I thought Prof. Feramisco genuinely tried to connect with students and often asked us about updates on our lives during remote learning. We even had a "bring your pet to class day" where you could show your pet on camera, which was a wholesome moment in the class. Totally recommend this class!

I took this class during winter quarter which incorporate both online and in person. The online part was harder with this professor, but when the class went back to in person it was a great class. There was a paper and a final in this class along with 5 speeches. The Professor gave great feedback for the speeches and made it a comfortable environment for speeches. This comm 1 seems to be more work than this class with other Professors though.

As a second year, this has been my favorite in-person class I've taken so far. The workload is light, the lectures are engaging with a lot of group activities, and Professor Feramisco grades super fairly. If you know you're already good at public speaking, this class is an easy A for you. Professor Feramisco is a really kind person and cares about her students and their success. As long as you do relatively well in each speech, put enough effort into the writing analysis paper, and just do the final exam study she gives (it's almost exactly like the exam), you'll do well in this class. I was looking for a fun non-STEM class to take as a STEM major and I'm really glad I chose this one.

Professor Feramisco was a delight to have as a teacher. She was always supportive and ready to help if any of her students needed it. For context, I took this class online during the Spring quarter of the 20-21 school year. Throughout Fall and Winter quarters, all of my classes have largely been impersonal and lacking in engagement when it came to the professors. However, Professor Feramisco really exceeded all of my expectations with her encouraging and witty personality. To be honest, taking her class felt like being in an elementary school class again. She always made sure each other of her students were heard and encouraged participation. We were also placed in a lot of break-out rooms during the class which was a nice development since I actually got to talk to the people in my class for once.

Comm 1 was a really easy and enjoyable class. Feramisco expects you to participate each class, but the in class activities were super easy. You do not need to read or even buy the book, and honestly you don't really need to pay attention during her lectures because all of the material just focuses on how to improve your public speaking skills. As long as you put in some effort into your presentations and you show up to class, you should get an A.

I also felt like it was an actually beneficial class because it was really engaging. It actually helps your public speaking skills improve, and you do get close with the people in your class because it is so small. Definitely recommend taking Comm 1!

Her class is the best! She’s so helpful and genuinely cares about her students. This is a perfect class to take for elective credit if anything as the skills you learn from this class can benefit anyone in the future. Also, you will make so many friends from this class. The class is small and requires you to engage with your classmates and you learn a lot about them through their presentations. I can’t say I didn’t shed a tear on the last day of class knowing I wouldn’t see the same people every week anymore. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking this class especially if you’re a freshman as it’s the perfect prep class to get you ready for future college courses.
