GREAT CLASS! If you can get into it, you will seriously be so happy all quarter! Not only is the material and coursework manageable, but it is very interesting. I came into the course looking for an easy GE and ended up gaining a liking towards jazz music--even attending an extra jazz concert towards the end of the quarter.
Harrison is very passionate about his music, but he is not at all overwhelming. He makes lectures interesting and gives you the information that you need to know and will want to know. I gained a real appreciation for the music and his way of teaching. He would rather you get a good grade and learn to appreciate the music. Class is composed of midterm, 2 papers, performance report, and a final. Final and midterm are multiple choice.
Take this class!!!
Really easy class. As long as you memorize all of the artist and the songs you should be smooth sailing. DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS. Just check out the book in the music library and skim through the chapters before the midterm and final. I definitely recommend this class!! I had no prior jazz knowledge and I thought it was an easy A!
Took 50A and 50B
LOVED this class and professor so much i just had to take both the classes. If you are good at memorization, this class is for you.
Go to class, take notes on what he tells you to take notes, go home and memorize them (i used flashcards), and you'll get an A in the class. The discussion section is a bit bothersome because there is a bit of writing you will have to do, but it is such an easy A.
Def recommend taking this class!
Also, if you've read my review + are taking either 50A OR 50B. I have both the coursereaders still. $30 each! Contact me at (510)378-1716 if interested!
Course reader mentioned earlier by danceisthesolution@yahoo.com is sold!
Selling textbook required for 50A/50B for $30. Email me if interested at mguiselle@yahoo.com
This is a good class to take for a GE. It's straightforward and you don't have to deal with the highly subjective grading of a class like philosophy. A lot of the music he plays for you and makes you know for the midterm and final is pretty catchy.
For tests, you should first make sure you know every musician's instrument(s), roles, subgenre/time period, and other factual tidbits. The best way to do this is to make an Excel spreadsheet and list each musician on the left, and their characteristics on a bunch of columns to the right. Go through and quiz yourself by folding the papers so all but the names are covered and make marks next to the names as to what you think their instruments are, etc. You can grade yourself quickly and you'll learn all the information faster than any other method (flashcards aren't necessary because his tests are multiple choice). Know the conceptual stuff too. The book isn't that helpful but I would pay attention to what he says by word of mouth in addition to what he writes on the board. I noticed direct quotes from lecture showing up sometimes on the tests (he seems to refer to a script as he lectures and it likely contains everything you could possibly need to know).
I didn't think this class was a pushover as other people may suggest. You have to memorize ~100 musicians per test and you have papers to write and a performance to go to, but if you work diligently you should get no less than an A.
Great professor, easy class, highly recommend. The midterm and final are all multiple choice questions, with 10 of the questions being song identifications. They are somewhat difficult in the sense that you must memorize a lot of musicians and the instruments they played, but aside from that they are pretty easy. Essays were a breeze, they just take a while to write.
