Overall, I enjoyed this class and had a relatively easy time. Sometimes the lectures would get a bit confusing but Hsu was always willing to go over any problems that confused you. I do genuinely believe that Hsu wants students to do well and she’ll make sure to address any questions students have. If you’re ever lost during lecture I highly recommend going over the textbook examples- they helped a lot.
The first midterm was really easy and straightforward. The second midterm was slightly harder but still doable. In my opinion, the final was harder than the first midterm but easier than the second. You can find examples similar to the exam questions in the textbook.

Hsu was an amazing professor, and I highly recommend her to anyone who really wants to understand why something works!
She was super sweet and understanding and actively listens to feedback. Some people were saying that her homework was too much (I agreed), so she actually removed some questions and kept them as optional ungraded practice. She doesn't curve down, but I don't think she curves up either. I asked a ton of silly questions during class, and she took the time to answer all of them (either in class or in office hours). She's super knowledgable and really knows her stuff!
She's super accommodating as well. My power went out, so I asked for a one day extension, and I think she granted a week extension instead. I straight up forgot to hand in an entire quiz, and she didn't count that against me in my grade. Plus, I was being silly and forgot an entire page in my homework when submitting (export error), and she accepted the last page late cuz my first two pages proved I did it. Plus, some people ended up cheating on the midterm, and she did not penalize anyone who came forward, which again felt more than fair.
This may sound slightly nerd-ish, but her tests were also super fun and fair! I felt like everything on the exams were more than fair game, but they were still decently challenging, like a good puzzle. For online schooling, her tests are the perfect thing to just put on some music and get cozy doing them. If you do all of (or a majority of) the homework, attend her lectures, and skim the textbook, the tests should be a breeze (but a fun breeze!).
I highly recommend her as a prof!!

Fantastic class! It's fast paced-- you'll certainly learn a lot! Professor Hsu is super helpful, and she seems to really care about her students. Definitely do, and study, all the homework and lecture problems-- you won't regret it.

Professor Hsu was way better than my 31A professor, but even so, not the clearest. Lectures are BruinCast which is nice. She doesn't curve at all which is concerning. The only reason we all did well was because of the generous final grades due to COVID-19. Her policy for quizzes is nice. They do help raise grades and serve as a checkpoint of sorts throughout the quarter. The lowest grade is also dropped. From what I've heard from other 31B students, she is the best professor to take for this class.

Hsu is a relatively new professor at UCLA, so she is still figuring things out. Her first midterm was really hard, and she realized that so she eased up on the second midterm. Overall she is good at lecturing but when doing calculations she'll skip steps, so it gets confusing. Because the class is only 50 minutes she only has time to go over basics, so you have to self learn to the hard homework problems. Her tests consist of problems from worksheets, homework, and textbook examples. You should go over all the worksheet and text book example problems if you want to do well. Although this is technically a review of Calc 2 (Calc BC), do not come in arrogant as the material goes far more in depth than AP Calc.

Let me start off by saying, Professor Hsu was a drastic improvement from my 31A professor. That being said, this class wasn't easy for me, and I get the feeling a lot of people feel the same way. Even with the craziness of Winter Quarter 2020 and finals being held remotely, I'm not thrilled with my grade. I think the professor (and the department) handled the whole situation pretty fairly, and we were actually given a chance to make up a few points on the first midterm (because the average was significantly lower than the second). However, if we hadn't had these special accommodations, I would have gotten a much lower grade. Overall, I think she does her best to be helpful, but Calc definitely isn't my forte, and this class stressed me out. I like her as a person though, and I think with a bit more effort outside of class I could have done better.

I took 31A and 31B with professor Hsu and I believe she is a great professor. Her lectures are clear and usually pretty much everything in the test is covered in lectures / hw (maybe one question per test is a little harder). She's super helpful with students (OH, emails, piazza etc.). She also gives extra credit, 1% overall, which is a lot on a not curved class. In fact, at least for 31A,B she assigns grades on the standard UCLA scale: A+ 97.5, A 93%, A- 90 etc. However, if the class doesn't perform well, she finds way to bring the grades up (ex. with extra credit on the final to make up for a midterm with a low mean). Her quizzes are also fair and a pretty easy way to bump up your grade (they were hw problems). I didn't really like TA Erza.
