I am an international student from China. This is my first class at UCLA as a freshman. He gave me lots of personal suggestion during the office hours. The comments for each draft are clear and comprehensive.
We need to read several documents each class. However, he would like to upload all of the materials at the beginning of the semester, so you can arrange your time appropriately.
He is a student-centered professor. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to talk with him. All in all, he is a perfect instructor.
I am almost done taking his class and he is awesome! I'm currently a Freshman and I've got to say that he is an amazing Professor! I really like the topics we talk about in class such as artificial intelligence, the internet, post humanity, ethics, morals, and etc. He is very engaging and very helpful! I wish there were more English teachers like him! He provides you with the reading so no textbooks needed! We watch videos that are very interesting and movies as well! Obviously to watch at home and discuss it in class. He provides the movies and videos as well! Best teacher I've had!
Even though I strongly dislike writing, this class was pretty enjoyable. We only had to write two essays, and the prof gave us helpful feedback and lots of time to complete them. There were also two easy group project presentations, and sometimes we had to write summaries of assigned homework readings.
Prior to taking the class, I didn't know much about the class's subject matter (various topics related to technology/ethics). I enjoyed learning about these topics in addition to improving my writing.
I don't think the fact that the class was all engineers made a big impact on the overall experience, but it was kind of nice to be around people with similar academic goals.
This class was not hard, I just was not interested in the topic at all. We got to watch a movie for hw and the readings weren't difficult so if you're interested in the topic I would suggest taking this class
