Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: A

TAKE THIS CLASS! He is so insightful and classes are filled with meaningful discussion. He cares to get to know his students (and remembering them), and always has the best discussions in office hours when he is helping you with your speeches or essays. 100% recommend him! (also you don't need to buy the books- I certainly didn't use them).

Dr. Dee is one of, if not the, best professors at UCLA!!! Absolutely hilarious, engaging, helpful, etc. You just give three speeches throughout whole quarter and then one paper... he is not a harsh grader whatsoever. Classes begin with discussions; he'll randomly call on people but you get used to it and nothing is taken too seriously -- it makes the class super fun. Even if you're not trying to do Comm, take this class for an easy A, a place to improve your public speaking skills (don't be scared, some people in your class will be very very bad lol), and to experience Dr. Dee!

Quarter: Fall 2021
Grade: A
Dec. 14, 2021

Prof Dee has such a kind soul. So genuinely interested in getting to know every single one of his students - he makes sure each one feels engaged in the conversation. I wish that this quarter was not online so I could meet him in person as he is the best professor I have had at UCLA thus far. I had missed all of week 1 lecture as I assumed that it was recorded and my roommate had the frat flu - I thought that when I told him, he would mark off participation and basically see me in a different light. But I am happy to report that he did not was his cherry, sweet self like always.

If there is any class you want to take with any professor, it's this class for sure.

If you are wondering about the structure of the class:

- 3 speeches (50% in total i wanna say)
- 2 speech evaluations (10% each)
- participate in class always

no tests, no midterms. amazing stuff prof!

Dr. Dee is an amazing human being; if I could retake this course, I definitely would. He is so encouraging, kind, and helpful both inside and outside the classroom setting. If you're not comfortable public speaking, don't let that deter you from taking this class- Dr. Dee is a very reasonable and mindful grader.

Quarter: Winter 2019
Grade: A
Sept. 14, 2019

Dr. Dee is certainly a very helpful professor. He tries his best to actively include every student in class discussions--which themselves are very interesting. Instead of following a course reader, as do most professors, Dr. Dee proposes conversations based on a range of topics related to current events. It is clear to see why a prestigious university would desire Dr. Dee's knowledgable services.
HOWEVER, as I emphasize this the most I can, Dr. Dee has racist and xenophobist tendencies. When talking to students from other countries such as myself, he was constantly overbearing by, for instance, asking a fellow classmate in front of all our peers what his status of immigration was. Continuing to inquire if that particular individual "was there legally?".
In the end, I did well in his class.
As to Dr. Dee, despite carrying the capacity of being a qualified professor, he carries instead old Southern beliefs of white superiority that should've long been extinguished.

Comm 1 with Bridgewater was extremely easy and fun to take. We had to present three speeches to the class and had one final essay. During class, we talked about current events for the first half of class and would go through presentations for the second half of class. The presentations were on fun topics and were graded really easy as long as you try. If you are looking for an easy GE take this one!

100% recommend this class. I am not a communications major, but even though it is outside my scope I found it extremely useful and applicable for my everyday life. This class consists of 3 speeches, 1 essay, and 3 brief homework assignments. The class is more of a conversation with the class exploring the different topics that you will be talking about in your speeches. Even though the conversations may seem random at times, once you start preparing for your speech you can see its usefulness.

I will be honest and say that I only signed up for this class because it was an easy A, BUT I learned so much and Dr. Dee makes sure to make the class a welcoming environment for everyone. Before this class, I was not comfortable with public speaking, but I can tell I have improved a lot in 10 weeks.

He is extremely approachable and is willing to help you with your speech if you are ever stuck. Take the class, it will brighten your quarter.

Honestly, I took this class with Dr. Dee because of all the hype on this Bruinwalk page. And after taking this course with him, I'd definitely say I agree with the hype! Dr. Dee is an amazing professor! I took this class online, but even over Zoom Dr. Dee was able to foster such a safe and welcoming space for our little class of 25 students. I think I'm a decent public speaker, but I was still nervous about taking this course. Your grade/the class is made up of 3 speeches: a movie critique, a personal commitment speech, and a persuasive speech. Also, there's a final paper where you analyze a persuasive speech of your choice.
The best part of this class I think is the community Dr. Dee creates. He engages everyone each lecture and will constantly ask you your opinion on whatever he's talking about. There's never really a right answer, he just wants to know what you think. I could really tell he cared about us and our wellbeing during lecture, and that made everyone more comfortable giving their speeches. He's such a supportive professor, he's also a very quirky guy. But overall, like everyone else I would 100% take this class again, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you take it too!

Dr. Dee truly is a fabulous professor, and I recommend you take a class from him during your time at UCLA. You spend each lecture chatting about socially relevant topics and listening to students give presentations. He tailors the material to discuss subjects that students are actually interested in, and he did a great job of making every single person in the class feel valued and heard. Even though I took the class remotely, I was able to make genuine connections with some of my classmates and get to know everyone. Plus you definitely get to improve your public speaking and presentation skills.

I LOVE DR. DEE. Seriously one of the easiest and most enjoyable classes at UCLA! The only warning I have to give is that it is a speech class, so if you're uncomfortable with public speaking you may struggle (or you can grow/improve your public speaking skills!) The class was always relaxed and we only gave three-ish speeches total. The class was small, making it so that I was able to actually meet friends in the class and learn super interesting things about everyones lives. I 100% recommend this class for anyone who likes a fun, relaxed environment focused on story telling OR someone one knows practicing public speaking is a key life skill.
