I <3 Dr. Dee. I honestly do not care what your major is, you need to take this class. Especially during COVID when so many of my classes felt really meaningless/inconsequential Dr. Dee was a light in the darkness. I would 100% recommend to literally anyone.
Dr. Dee is my favorite professor I have had at UCLA so far! I took his course when we were abruptly put online for spring of 2020, and I was extremely impressed at how high energy and engaging he was despite being on zoom for a public speaking class. Dr. Dee genuinely cares about his students and helps to make the classroom environment comfortable and supportive for everyone. I found this helpful when giving speeches (as it can be nerve racking)! I truly would give this professor a 10/10 rating and encourage you all to take his class.
I think that Dr. Dee is THE professor to take at UCLA. Every day, he gives an extremely engaging lecture and then ends the class with student speeches. His lectures are about current events and just a ton of random stuff. We would talk about Tik Tok and then jump to how many languages there are in the world. PLEASE take Dr. Dee if you get the chance!
Amazing class!
I would recommend anyone take this class as it has real life, everyday implications. We are assigned three speeches in total, with a final paper in the end. Dr. Dee really knows how to put the speaker at ease and instill confidence in his students. I would recommend this class to anyone! Even if English is your second language, or you have prior experience, take this class!
COMM 1 is a great class and I would definitely recommend taking it with Dr. Dee. He starts every class with a discussion about current events and he calls on people so make sure you pay attention. The discussions were always interesting and fun. During the second half of class, people give their speeches. Throughout the quarter, you have to give 3 speeches and do 3 writing responses on online speeches. This class is easy and it has a light workload but I learned a lot and got more comfortable with public speaking.
Where do I start with Dr. Dee, This guy is a literal fucking KING!!!!! I have never been so engaged and interested in a class before this one. Dr. Dee really creates a diverse and welcoming environment for his students. I would go to his office hours just to talk because he is so knowledgeable and endearing. This class is easy, and I'm sure a lot of you will choose this class because of that reason, but I would choose this class just because of him. Every day in this class he helps students become better community members in the sense that he paves the way for his students to be more inclusive, mindful, and understanding of our surroundings.
If you are someone who does not like public speaking its okay, this class is not about shaping you to be the next communication prodigy, it's about improving your skills. There were plenty of kids in my class who were clearly shy and reserved, who later opened up throughout the quarter. This class is really just about your message and what you have to say to the world, but through speeches. Give your insight and your knowledge and the rest will follow. I thoroughly enjoyed this class, although it got a little boring after a while listening to all the speeches everyday, id rather be bored doing that than having to listen to a lecture for 2 hours. Bottom line, This class is really an experience that no one should miss out on!!!!! Take this class if you can and you will not be disappointed.
Dr. Dee is a great professor. He clearly cares about his students and spends a lot of time getting to know each one. The class is interesting and is very helpful for someone looking to improve their public speaking skills. I highly recommend taking this class with Dr. Dee.
Comm 1 with Dr. Dee is an easy class with little workload required. The entire class is giving three speeches (media/movie critique, personal commitment, persuasive) and one 7 page paper on a speech you watch outside of class (a TED talk or something). He assigns three books, but they aren't necessary to read, except for maybe certain parts that will help you write the final paper. Class is always engaging and interesting because you get to know your classmates through their speeches throughout the quarter. However, Dr. Dee's portion of the class he spends lecturing is often hard to follow and connect to the point of the class. You don't really take notes, but are expected to comment on people's speeches and write a short critique for each speech. Dr. Dee's grading is pretty subjective, it's impossible to guess what you'll get for each speech and hard to see how you can improve for the next one. Overall, though, an easy class with very little workload required. Would be a good fourth class if you already have a heavy courseload.
I absolutely loved this class! Bridgewater is super funny and helps you improve your public speaking skills by creating a very constructive class environment in which you and your peers bond as sort of a team. He is a very fair grader and helped a lot of people overcome their fears of giving speeches. He is also very informed on what is happening in the world--it was an everyday thing to discuss current events and express opinions. Throughout the course, you give 3 speeches, participate in discussions, give speakers feedback on their speeches, and write a term paper on a speech (evaluating techniques used). I highly recommend participating in class not just for the grade, but to get more out of the class. I was really nervous before going into the class, but I wish I could take classes like this every quarter. I definitely became more confident in myself and my speaking abilities. Definitely take this class with Bridgewater!
Dr. Dee is one of the nicest and most understanding professors I've ever met! He really tries to engage the class so speak up. Go to office hours even if you don't have anything specific to talk about, he is a great conversationalist and hands out candy.
