I thought that this course was a lot of work for a GE. It required lots of memorization for the exams and the labs were tedious and time consuming. There is extra credit which helps your grade a lot. Make sure to do well on the lab quizzes because they can boost up your lab grade. Lectures were really boring, but they are podcasted. However, Professor Schauble seems very concerned about students and is very nice when answering questions.
This class really gets your hopes up when you see his grading scheme and the extra credit was nice too. The class material itself was really interesting. My midterms did not go so well, so I was extremely worried at the end of the quarter for my grade, but the final was pretty good. I would recommend this GE, you don't need to attend class, because of the video podcasts, so it really helps if you need to have another class at the same time.
Honestly, I didn't find Schauble as bad as the reviews made him seem. He did test us on material not covered in lecture, but he provided us extra notes for that. He gives extra credit too, amounting up to two percent. It may not be a lot, but they're easy. You just have to go to seminars or video screenings and write a page on it (I recommend going to The Deep video screening- super cool). They exams were not that bad. You can tell more or less what the emphasis will be based on lectures. He also puts up practice exams. I admit this class wasn't as interesting as I expacted, but I did learn a lot. I thought we'd be studying more marine biology, but most of it was the physical and chemical aspects of the oceans. Not super easy A, but really not that bad. It was the easiest class of the quarter for me.
This course is not an adequate GE course for non science majors. There are 2 midterms and a final as well as a separate lab final which are mostly multiple choice and a few diagram/short answers, however these exams are extremely detailed and specific and altogether very tricky. His lectures cover about 25% of the book, but he expects you to learn the other 75% on your own, and he does test you on it. The labs are not necessarily difficult, just tedious and long and just a pain to get through. I studied for the exams very much and still did not do well. I highly suggest avoiding this course at all costs. Its just not worth the work you have to put in, and then still wind up with a disappointing grade.
PS: If you MUST take this class, try to get Paul Burgess as your TA :)
I came into Oceanography this past fall quarter thinking it would be an easy GE, but unfortunately it was not. The class lectures can get boring and he also tests you on stuff that he does not go over lecture (some of it was very specific as well). The labs were okay and pretty easy, so definitely do well on the quizzes because they can help you boost your grade up. Also try to get Paul as your TA, he's pretty awesome and extremely laid back. If you plan on taking this class I recommend reading the material he assigns and highlight the areas that are presented in his lecture slides; though he does test you on stuff he does not go over, a lot of the material on the exams are stuff from the slides but in greater detail. Make sure you attend lab and take the quizzes!! Take advantage of the extra credit too!
Oh and do not come in thinking you're going to learn about dolphins and what not because you will be disappointed!
Professor Schauble honestly seems to care about the students, going as far as offering extra credit opportunities to bolster students grades. The material was not incredibly difficult and although I feel no urge to become an oceanographer soon, the information seemed at least quasi-interesting. If you are looking for a GE which doesn't require a whole lotta time, and feel like learning a little bit about the oceans, I suggest taking this class.
Oceanography: The Prof. is very flexible and concerned with students' needs (I never had a prof. who would talk to students if they were unable to make it to a test).HOWEVER, I did feel that the prof. would sometimes go too quickly and I am not sure if it was the room we were in for lecture or it was just the way he spoke but it was truly difficult to hear things he would say. I went about 95% of the lectures and went to lab however still did badly on the midterms. This part of the class annoyed me to no end! My major requires a lot of reading so I was not really able to pay much attention to it--out of any science GE class this class stressed the reading the most. I guess my desire to just be done with my last GEs blinded me from picking a class that I would be semi-interested.
My advice: print out the slides, follow along, do your best at reading the book. BUT if you really have no interest in the subject, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
