Professor Upton was AMAZING! The Beatles were definitely a subject I didn't expect to become so invested in. Class was online, but the TAs and other students made it fun chatting and reacting to her lecture. She shows a good amount of music videos and documentaries so the slides aren't boring. Our grade consisted of weekly discussion posts with one reply, quizzes corresponding to each lecture, a research paper, and a final reflection in place of an actual final. Overall, I'd highly recommend this class as a GE. Also, Alex was the best TA I've had. Super funny and understanding when it came to deadlines!
Professor Upton is truly the sweetest, most caring professor I have ever had. She deserves a 6 on bruinwalk. Upton was so accommodating with online schooling - we got 10 minute breaks during lecture, the midterm was cancelled and we were given full credit, the final was given as a 1-3 page reflection paper, and the analysis paper deadlines were often pushed a week to give us extra time. Professor Upton was very clear that she intended for this class to give us as little stress as possible and she delivered. The class material was SO engaging, and the analysis essay gave us room to pick a niche topic of interest which made the whole experience that much more enjoyable. The homework for this class is listening to the Beatles albums, movies and short readings on the Beatles. While it is not necessary to complete the readings and homework to do well in this course, I completed them all simply because they were interesting and I truly enjoyed this course. I feel so grateful to Professor Upton for making this quarter easy and enjoyable in such difficult global times.
Take this class! Not only will you have a chill and amazing time, you will learn so so much about art, history, and just pop culture. I didn't really care about the beatles before this class and now i'm a huge fan. I see beatles references everywhere. This class is truly life changing
I took this class to satisfy a gen ed, since I'm not the biggest fan of art appreciation or art history, which were my other options. I knew some of the Beatles songs and not much about them, but this class was totally appropriate for people with all backgrounds in Beatles music--you definitely do not have to be a die hard fan. I will admit, some of the music analysis was kind of tough for me as I have no experience whatsoever in music, so I didn't know any of the terms or definitions that students were often discussing. However, the professor and TAs know that some students are a little out of the loop, so they're very lenient and have lots of OH if you need help. Discussions were worth attending, as besides being graded for participation, it was always just a relaxed discussion of the weeks material that felt really casual and usually helped my understanding of how to analyze music within the context of the week's material. Overall, would definitely recommend the class to anyone who needs an art credit without having to take an intense art class.
super easy class, no midterm, final is a reflection paper, and a 5-6 paper on two songs. professor upton was super engaging and nice too! I had Monica Chieffo as my TA and she was super chill, accommodating and nice, highly recommend!!
pls take this class, its one of the easiest classes I've ever taken.
If you have the opportunity to take a course with Professor Upton, please do!! The lectures are very engaging and if you have no background on The Beatles, no problem, you will leave this class super engaged. Would 100% take this course again! She is really understanding in regards to accommodations given the remote learning and always available. The final paper t basically gives you free reign to explore two songs of similar characteristics and then your thoughts on them. The reflection was about ANYTHING you took away from the class, which again is not difficult at all. 10/10 recommend!
So easy omg, you don't need to go to lecture really especially after she cancelled the midterm and turned the final into a final reflection about you learned which she basically gave us two weeks to do. Morgan was my TA who I loved having, he was always really helpful in office hours with my paper. This class is such an easy A and at least my TA graded really easy on the final paper and in general. Would take this class again, Professor Upton is also so sweet and for the lectures I did go to I actually learned a lot.
take this class! I took this class as a GE and loved it. Best and easiest class at UCLA. There are no assignments that you need to turn in throughout the quarter beside the midterm, final, and paper. But since it was remote learning this quarter, professor Upton canceled the midterm and gave everyone 100% then changed the final to a 1-3 page reflection essay about what we have learned in the class. Super interesting- the class is all about the Beatles! Would definitely recommend for an easy and fun GE
Overall, this is one of the best classes I have taken at UCLA. Before the class, my understanding of The Beatles wasn't very strong, only from listening to their music over the years. Throughout the class, I not only learned more about the history of the group, but learned a new understanding of both their albums and individual songs. I would highly recommend this class to anyone that is interested in music at large or want to learn more about The Beatles in general. The class has multiple written assignments, but all are very interesting and more based on thorough completeness rather than correct answers. Given everything is more personal, I was able to connect the course material with my life which was an awesome experience.
This is by far the best class I have taken at UCLA. I did come into this class as a huge Beatles fan and I thought that I would not learn anything new but I definitely did. Professor Upton did an amazing job teaching us about not only The Beatles, but also about what was going on during their careers. She gave A LOT of context which was pretty interesting. I was not crazy about learning about different art movements toward the end of the class but it was relevant so it was not too bad. The midterm and final were take home essays which were pretty easy if you are familiar with the songs on certain albums. There is also 2 weekly discussion posts which are only about 250 words so it isn't bad. You should definitely take this class and appreciate Professor Upton because she is literally amazing.
