This class is awesome. Woo makes accounting not boring. I highly recommend taking accounting during the quarters where woo is teaching.
If you are taking this class for your major, trust your future into Woo's divine understanding of accounting and how to teach it. Her lectures are clear, concise and her teaching format is honestly just the best I've seen at UCLA. Also, taking MGMT 1B with her the quarter after taking MGMT 1A is a no-brainer so do that.
Woo is an amazing professor. She organizes her lectures well and has worksheets that you can print out and fill in as she teaches. Her class was asynchronous with live office hours, and she posts the recording of the office hours fast. There were 5 quizzes worth 10% each and a practice set worth 50%. The practice set is a fake business and you have to do the accounting for the month. Start early because it is very detailed and takes time. She offers a few points of extra credit and is overall a great person to take accounting with. The class itself is not that bad if you're willing to put in the time and effort.
Professor Woo is a great lecturer. I really enjoyed listening to her lectures and learning from her. She makes hard concepts easy to understand. She is super organized, and she has her own lecture worksheets that you can printout and follow along. I found this more helpful than generic slides from textbooks that other professors use. There are five quizzes that are worth 10% each, and there is an individual final project that is worth 50% of your grade. Quizzes are NOT easy. You have to invest your time and do homework problems before taking these quizzes. Regarding the final project, get started on it early (like right after chapter 3)! Go to office hours to get help. If you can't make it to office hours, she records and uploads office hour videos. If you watch all her lecture and office hours videos, there is no way that you can get anything less than a B in her class. Professor Woo made accounting fun, and I really enjoyed taking her class.
One of the worst lecturers in the accounting minor. Although I received an A in her class, I would never take her class again and would not recommend anyone to take her class.
-Weekly homework assignments roughly take 4 hours.
-Weekly readings are 80+ pages and she expects you to read each page in depth.
-Midterm and final exams are ridiculously hard, similar to Ravetch 1B exams. No multiple choice.
-She does not care if her students understand the material, she only cares to rush/finish her lecture and cram a large amount of material in each lecture.
-Lectures are unappealing and boring as she directly reads off her notes without clearly explaining the reasoning.
-She constantly showed up late to office hours.
-She does not give practice midterm or finals, and does not hold review sessions.
I took this class mainly to see if accounting was for me -- it's definitely not. Despite that, I feel like I learned a lot about the basics of accounting which is useful regardless of what you plan to do in life. This class was difficult and there was a decent amount of work to keep up with. The tests weren't the worst in the world, but you HAVE to study for them because there are a lot of questions that rely on nitpicky accounting rules. When doing the practice set, make sure you go to every single one of her office hours because she goes over and answers tons of questions during those that will make your life a lot easier. I made mistakes on mine that I could've avoided had I gone to all the office hours. Professor Woo really does put in the effort to help her students, which I did appreciate. All in all, this class was STRESSFUL but teaches some important skills and for many people it's not optional, so take it with Woo if you can! **I'm selling the textbook for this course (retails for $133) in brand new condition! No marks or highlighting. Email islandbeesz@gmail.com **
Very organized professor. Her slides and lectures are recorded and are very clear. 5 quizzes worth 10% each and a practice set worth 50%. The quizzes consisted of 10 often complex problems needing calculations, and you had 20 minutes to complete. That was the only downside. Her lectures were clear and organized and the quizzes and practice set were not super difficult, and did come from the lectures.
Professor Woo was very engaging, which is hard to achieve when learning online. Her class structure is very organized and straightforward, and she likes to make sure her students are on top of everything. The grade is based on 5 quizzes spread out throughout the quarter and a turn in final that you essentially have all quarter to do. I highly recommend taking 1A with her and am looking forward to continuing taking her classes.
