Professor Ozel is very helpful and willing to work with students, which was appreciated considering classes were moved online during the last weeks of the quarter. Exams are fair (midterm and final), with reading assignments for discussion sections but no graded homework. I'd recommend Ozel for any class in the math dept.
Professor Ozel is very helpful and he explains things very well. Lectures are clear. Problems on quizzes are pretty easy; midterm is easy as well. Final exam is harder.
Amazing professor. His lectures are clear and he provides his own lecture notes which is pretty nice. Would highly recommend taking this class with him!
I really enjoyed math 61 with Prof. Ozel. His lectures were engaging and I found the material to be really interesting. Since this was a summer class, homework was optional, but I recommend at least looking at it because it really helped me on exams. For his exams, there's a lot of material covered, but the content is not difficult, it just requires some thinking. Definitely recommend taking this class with Ozel if you can
In my opinion, Dr. Ozel is one of the best math professors I've had so far. He is very passionate about the material and explains everything really well during lectures. He always makes sure to answer all questions students may have during lectures and office hours and is really kind. The exams had a few questions that were a little challenging, but definitely not difficult overall as long as you prepare appropriately. The quizzes were really straightforward too, and he allowed you to drop one of the quizzes.
The only downside to taking the class online with him is that he tended to go over material pretty quickly during lectures since he used pre-written notes, which made taking down notes during lectures difficult. But all his lectures were recorded and the notes were uploaded to CCLE, so it wasn't really a big issue. Nevertheless, I'm extremely glad to have taken this class with Dr. Ozel, and if I have a choice, I will definitely take another class with him again in the future.
Highly recommend Ozel -- he gives clear lectures, is very approachable, and knows the material well. I suppose the only thing prospective actuaries should be aware of is that his class doesn't completely prepare you for the actuary exam. If you want to pass any actuary exam you have to put in a hell of a lot of hours outside the classroom, and even then you still might not pass haha
I would highly recommend taking this class with professor Ozel. His lectures are clear and his hand written notes are really helpful. There wasn't really any homework for this class since he doesn't collect them - students could just choose which problems they want to do for their own practice. The only shortcoming of this class was the number of exam and quizzes - there were 5 quizzes, 2 midterms and 1 final. However, he drops two of the lowest quizzes. Overall, this was an enjoyable class, and professor Ozel is definitely one of the nicest professors in the math department.
One of the best Math Professors I've had at UCLA.
Professor Ozel was a terrific professor and a great choice for any math class.
The workload is very light, with no turned in homework, a couple of quizzes and 1 midterm and 1 final.
Quizzes
His quizzes were short and simple to do. He had five quizzes each with one or two questions (keep in mind this is a summer course), and he drops the lowest 2 quizzes.
This category should be and will be an easy 100%.
Exams
Very straightforward and straight out of his lectures and textbook. I think the average was like a 95% on his midterm, (I don't really remember the exact number, but it was a crazy high number).
He does not curve down either and grades very nicely. I got some notation wrong, but all he did was write a note on my exam saying to change the notation, and he didn't take off any points.
His final was just like his midterm, very straightforward, lifted from his lectures and textbook. I don't know the average for the final, but I'm sure it was just as high as his midterm average.
His lectures were engaging, helpful, and overall very interesting. My only gripe with his lectures was that he had everything written down in advance on a pdf, so he went a little bit fast and it was definitely not possible to write everything down before he moves on.
I ended up writing down the notes and sometimes printing them before lecture, and then just took notes on his thoughts and tips.
Overall, terrific professor, helpful, engaging, and very straightforward. I highly recommend him for math 61 and any class.
Basically everything on his note is from Elementary Analysis by Ross, without changing a letter at all. Why bother. Just go study the textbook and do the exams.
Professor Ozel is passionate about mathematics and he is very helpful during office hours. That being said, I did not find his lectures particularly helpful. Lectures mainly involve him reading over pre-written lecture notes that cover the exact same information as the textbook.
Homework is not required but exams are frequent, with their difficulty being: final > midterms >> quizzes. 1 drop quiz is allowed.
