Lectures were dry and boring. Yep, I said it. He never states an "opinion" and is very ambivalent as to what his point is. It was only until two-third into the course that I had an epiphany in my dorm as to what the hell it was that he was trying to say. I was like a whatever class,.... meh.. I got a good grade and I didn't do all the readings... would I take him again? Probably not.

COURSE TAKEN: History 142D, U.S. Popular Culture Logistics: lecture, no section, 4 books, 30% in-class midterm [terms and essay, which he goes over in class], 60% final paper, and extra credit [1-page paper at the end of your midterm]. I really really loved this class. Due to my interest in American history, I found learning about it from a cultural perspective extremely fascinating. Professor Avila is an extremely engaging lecturer who comes prepared with videos and photos to help keep you engaged. This class encompasses pop culture from about 1880 to 1970. The readings are helpful, especially for the midterm, and the content of the course is exciting if you're into movies, TV, celebrities, and other fun topics. I wish I could take this class again.

Summer 2018 - This is my second time taking a class with Avila because he's really that great. I'm not being dramatic when I say this but I literally did not touch a single piece of the reading all class and got an A. Just come to lecture, stay engaged, ask questions, and you'll get an A. He's awesome and I learned so much thanks to him.
