This class has been renumbered to Educ 119, but it is absolutely awful. Professor Orfield refuses to use slides or any sense of class notes. The entire grade is based on two assignments: a 10 page paper and a 24 hour final.

The 10 page paper had no real instructions or guidelines and professor Orfield wouldn't help us out at all for the most part, including ignoring emails from students and not clarifying any instructions. The TAs did their best to help out but would admit that they were not given any information from the professor either.

The final was similar in that it did not have many clear directions or guidelines. We were given a study guide of possible questions and then told that three would be picked and of those we had to pick 2 for the final. We also were told to include readings. (Lecture material did not correspond to readings) The most frustrating part was that he changed the date of the final from the my.ucla date, meaning that part of my 24 hours was taken up by another final and my flight home for break that I had bought a month in advance based on my finals schedule. This meant that I had to answer all of the possible questions ahead of time to be able to turn in the final in time.

The absolute worst part of this class was that at the end of the quarter we just got a letter grade and no specific scores for our papers or finals. Essentially, the grade could be random and arbitrary for all I know since there's no evidence for why I received my grade. While some other students said that they received feedback on their papers, I did not receive anything and thus have nothing to grow or learn from due to this class and was just given an arbitrary letter grade. Whatever you do, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It isn't worth the confusion or chaos involved.
